  • Bay of Pigs

From the November 2007 Issue of Military History:

Should the United States have abandoned "plausible deniability" and committed full, overt support to the Cuban exiles at the Bay of Pigs?

We shouldn't have allowed the operation to grow out of control in the first place.

It was initially designed to land a well-trained cadre near the city of Trinidad; from where it would infiltrate into the Escambray Mountains and join with anti-Castro guerillas. This might have been successful...at least initially.

The operation mutated into an invasion that had no hope of succeeding without direct US intervention. Some very bright, Ivy Leaguers at the CIA became so enamored with their brilliant plan to topple Castro, that they lost touch with reality. In the event that the invasion failed, which it did, the attack force was supposed to escape into the Escambray Mountains. Unfortunately the invasion site had been moved from Trinidad to Bahia de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) About 20 miles of swamps separated the Bay of Pigs from the supposed mountain refuge.

Didn't the Bay of Pigs get chosen because it was in range of the Honduran airfields being used by the A-26s? I have always wondered what would have happened to Eisenhower's place in History if the Invasion had happened during his presidency. Wouldn't the Sierra Maestra been better than the Sierra Escambray? It would have been closer to Guantanamo Bay.
