    This topic really goes into the realm of diplomacy; but Clausevitch pointed out that war is a continuation of diplomacy by different means. Why the USA ever involved themselves in that country after seeing that the USSR could do nothing against them since the invasion of 1979. The USSR had borders with Afghanistan and they completely failed in controlling that nation. The USSR had to leave after the mountain people spanked their bottoms for over ten years. Why the USA wanted to start a war on the other side of the planet where no one had succeeded is mystifying
