  • yeah it's just funny to me seeing Russians rocking flat brims because it's such a stark contrast to the time I when I lived there. Anyway, I sent you a PM with some more Russian rap.

As in civil war drama, I liked the "41st" , "There where 2 Comrades in the Army" and "THE FLIGHT" better.
Interestingly, that was not made as drama definitely - it was conceived as "Eastern" initially then the director added lots of humor so as a result he couldn't receive permission to show that movie as "disgracing holy image of the Civil War". There is a story that it went to distribution only because Brezhnev occasionally saw it and was very delighted. Other anecdotes of "White Desert Sun" here (in Russian)

True, it's also been adressed on the http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066565/
Westeners are surprised to find out, that artist's behind the iron curtain
developed their own subculture, distancing themselves from the ruling class.
Implementing hidden messages, clever written scripts to adress social and political problems. Often they had unlimited budged's if they had previously pleased some cultural beourocrats. They not only used it for their project,
but supporting a sort of bohemian lifestyle, that was hidden from the party.
They knew how to throw parties, make fun of their leaders, listen to western music and get away with it. You had some very bright intellectual talents
insceneating the most outrageous happenings. Sometimes they traveled to west germany, on a Tournee or whatever, meeting students like me at the
local hangouts, and hec, did we ever had fun. I was invited to eastgermany a couple of times and it was great. I really miss the ambiance of that today.
It's something that can never be recreated.

          • Well, looks like it has some good modern actors and some epic kabooms... I don't know though, if it is some romantic portrayal of Whites as some noble lost-cause victims, I probably won't be interested.

Hmmmm what's wrong with a film showing the "White" Russian side made by Russians? I am sure they were villified, often rightfully as many were nasty pieces of work, during the Soviet period. At the same time they were romanticised here in the West at times (look at the films, cartoons about Anastasia for example). I actually was a census taker and met a Russian who labelled his origin as Russian (White) didn't talk to him about politics or his past though. Should have as he was in his 90s in 1986 (was a summer job lots of fun).

              • That's cool, I'm just saying it would be lame to me if it showed the reds as they used to show the whites in Soviet movies. A reverse propaganda.

However, not all Soviet movies portryaed the whites as caricatures.

"Two Comrades Were Serving" is a great example, there is a main charachter there that is a white and he is portrayed very rounded-ly by a famous Soviet actor. But some of the lesser white characters are depicted as fools.

Then in the 1980's, there were actually a number of white-themed movies, like "Moonzond", where both sides were portrayed seriously. If this movie is like that then I'd be happy with it.

For sure...look at films like "Gettysburg" as a fair film for US Civil War.

                  • Yeah, I've seen it. I don't think it is such a big issue in the US. I mean, shoot look at "Birth of A Nation"...

The whites were shown as horribly inept in most movies, they were hardly even showed them firing guns, only running and giving up, unless they were executing communists or terrorizing poor peaceful people.

                    • "Admiral Kolchak" is a brand new miniseries, nobody have watched it in Russia yet.

If to speak about the cIvil WAr so in the most Sviet era movies they were shown as fools but sometimes there were very good movies.

"Moonzund" - a very good movie about the time of the revolution in the Baltic Fleet while there was the naval battle for Moonzund.

"Dauria" - mini-Tv series about Cossacks of the Dauria Region of the Civil War time (in the Far East)

"Hozhdenie po mukam" ("Long way through pains"?) - epic mini-TV series about tragedy of a few officers and his wives.

"Quiet Don" - old soviet version. - it is a great movie about the tragedy of the Don Cossacks.

Ther were 2 movies based on novels of Milhail Bulgakov

"Beg" ("The running") - about the evacuation of the Crimea in 1921 and the fate of the whites in emmigration.

("Once two comrades served..." is a good movie about the same events from Red side)

and "Dni Turbinykh" ("The Turbin's Days") - based on the "White Guard" novel - shows the events of 1918 in Kiev.

Brand new mini-TV series "Death of the Empire" is an excellent movie about a few officers of the RUssian counter0espionage service on the background of events of 1914-18.

                        Yes, I agree with Andrey.
And "Death of an Empire" (Gibel Imperij) is now one of my top ten movies , and here are some teasers:

I bought this minseries 3 years ago, and I'm watching it over and over again.
It's fantastic. My russian language skills are really bad, but if you have studied russian history about WW1, and the civil war, you should not have too much trouble to follow the story.

                        • About the Civil War and revolution, I recently watched the 1968 Two Comrades Were Serving, about the last days of the war in Crimea. I thought it was very good, much more varied in theme than I expected. It also looked very good for a black and white movie. Probably better that it was black and white. Anyway the battle even came across well.

                          • Yeah, Two Comrades is a classic. The horse trying to swim at the end always made me so sad.
