I said to give BOTH original Russian and translated English. For many Westerners Russian letters (even written by Latin letters) are only a fewq meaningless symbols.

      • Yesterday I saw new Russian movie "Posledniaia ispoved" ("The last confession"). It is a brand new Russian movie based on real events.

It is a remake of the Soviet movie "Molodaia Gvardiia" ("Young Guard") which was based on the novel with the same name by Alexander Fadeev.

There are some differences in the description of the events but the authors of the new version speak they used archival papers and not Fadeev's book (but I don't think the new movie shows 100% truth ).

1942. The Germans are moving towards Stalingrad. Soviet town of Krasnodon was occupied. A group of former graduates of Krasnodon's school organised underground organisation of "Molodaia Gvardiia" ("Young Guard"). Nobody ordered them to do it, they themselves did it. They were 15-18-years-old boys and girls. The movie (like the old Soviet version) describes the actions of that organization. It is not a fiction. The most of the names are real.

This new Russian movie is relatively good on the background of the stream of trash like "Leningrad", "Last armored train" and so on.

When I read it I recalled the time in the beginning of 90th when I had seen "Sands of Ivodjima" with English language...

I don't know why "Liberation" (and some other movies) is not translated on English. Every year Russian TV shows it on Victory Day.

                    very well.

The 9th Company is a movie about Afghanistan war.

It is very close to "The Platoon" by Oliver Stone (but I think "The Platoon" is better "The Platoon" is one of my most favourite movies...)

                    It is good movie.

Here are the latest links on some of the best Soviet/Russian military movies (on www.ruscico.com, the official site of the Russian Cinema Council):

The best of the best are

                    "They fought for the Motherland"
                    http://www.ruscico.com/detail.php?lang=en&film=322

                    "Dawns are quiet here"
                    http://www.ruscico.com/detail.php?lang=en&film=3
(To the point the description of the events in the movie is not correct.

A flak-gun battery is equipped by girls and there is only one man there – the battery commander. They are in a far village. There are no other troops there. One day a girl-soldier saw two German paratroopers in a nearest forest. The battery commander sent report to headquarters but the headquarters was very far to react quickly. Vaskov decided to capture the 2 Germans. He chose 5 girls and leaded his small group to intercept the Germans. They didn’t know the amount of the Germans was many more than two… )

                    "The hot snow"
                    http://www.ruscico.com/detail.php?lang=en&film=338

                    The others are also excellent

                    http://www.ruscico.com/detail.php?lang=en&film=113

Some things are truthfull but in common is is nonsence.

Its author (don't remember his name now) is very odious figure.

The best movie abot Chechen war is "Честь имею" ("Chest imeiu").

                        • Zvezda (2002) 7.5/10

There are two copies of Zvezda out. Mine is the one that says Russian Cinema Council Collection. The one that says not for sale in Russia.

The year is 1944. Seven young war scouts go behind the German lines, trying to locate the enemy defenses and report them to headquarters. The previous two groups of scouts never returned.

Warning: This review may contain spoilers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                          Pro's

The movie is beautifully filmed, with many wonderful landscape shots and locations.
The cast act like soldiers, and think like soldiers.
The action scenes are very well done. (One goof I notice, after Bykov is stabbed in the mud fight, we briefly see the knife dropped to the side and the blade clean.)
The uniforms and weapons are very authentic.
The tanks, where o where did they find so many world war 2 era tanks.
The director is very creative in the way it is filmed.
The story is very believable and looks at a subject of war not often seen in movies realistically.

                          Con's

The love story. When will movie makers learn that the love story 90% of the time ruins a good war movie. Thankfully it is kept to a minimum, BUT most of it could easily have been cut.

The director has a brilliant mind that likes to experiment with the way a scene is shot. Most of the time his experiments work. But not all ways. Towards the end of the film, the scouts are being chased by the Germans and one of then (can't remember who at the moment) leads the Germans on away from the main group, sacrificing his life in the process. The scene is weirdly filmed in that it looks like the background was shot first and the actor was stuck in front of a screen, with the background playing.

                          Conclusion

While not a classic, Zvezda is an above average war film worth seeing!!!

                          P.S.
I forgot to mention that the music really set the mood of the film and was incredible!!!!!!

                            Thanks for the review!

                            I have some comments

                            1. Love story... I read that a spectator had said that he himself had seen in Azerbaijan how local public (non-Russians, Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic) cried in cinema.

                            2. The director indeed used some extraordinary methods. For example, in some scenes the operator don't show faces of Germam soldiers. The effect is very impressive.

Towards the end of the film, the scouts are being chased by the Germans and one of then (can't remember who at the moment) leads the Germans on away from the main group, sacrificing his life in the process. 3. That scene is very good.

The effect you describe is really good.

There is a Russian saying about VERY drunken persons "Then ground suddenly raised and beated me on my face" - it is part of story of the drunken person about his feelings when he was falling.

Once I was VERY drunken and felt the same effect. It looked not like I was falling but like ground began to turn before my eyes and beated me in my side.

In the scene you describe the director tried to show the view of mortally wounded soldier who was falling...

                              Andrey I'm shocked
However, I too have been beated by the ground.
Then, lying on the ground, the whole world has turned before my eyes at ever increasing speed. This is a sure indicator that stomach contents are about to be available for inspection

BTW The film is very good entertainment.
