  • French fighting in Russia

1943. Vichy French newsreel of the French Volunteer Legion (Legion des Volontaires Francais) at Fort Cambronne in Western Russia. Filmed probably in 1942.

Anyone know wehre Fort Cambronne was? I have been unable to find it.

    Ft Cambronne?

If you have not already done so...

One clue is that 'General Count Etienne Cambronne' was a commander of Napoleon's Guard. He organized the infamous last stand of the Guard at Waterloo.

There is a locallity in France known as Cambronne. You might trace were the pro facist Charlemagne Division was organized and trained

      Thanks, Carl

All I can figure out so far is that the LVF was operating in Bielorussia in 1942 on anti-partisan duties. This corresponds with the video narration which states that the French troops were filmed behind the central sector of the Eastern Front. No info though on the actual location of the French volunteer base.

          Hi

          Read here
          http://pobeda.witebsk.info/land/?land=683

LVF was very dispersed, so hardly we can say now exactly where it was. But I saw their main base was in Krugloye settlement... No ideas where it can be. Probably somewhere around Witebsk...
Maybe this article will help you

          Regards

                  Merci beaucoup, mon ami!

However, it looks like they may be referring to another village called Murovo, which is east of Minsk.

How about the French Volunteer Normandy Fighter Air Regiment which participated in air battles at Moscow and later at Kursk. Soviets note the air regiment fought 78 air battles and scored 129 victories in the summer and fall of 1944.
