  • 8th Guards Rifle Div (component rifle rgts)

    Hi All,

I'm running across conflicting information while researching this unit.

Sharp lists the component rgts as:
    19 Gds Rifle Rgt
    23 Gds Rifle Rgt
    30 Gds Rifle Rgt

other refs seem to indicate that the division consisted of the
    1075 Gds Rifle Rgt
    1077 Gds Rifle Rgt
    1079 Gds Rifle Rgt

can anyone shed some light on this.

Initially the number of this division was the 316th Rifle Division
    It contained 1073, 1075, 1077 Rifle Regiments
When it became the Guards one (8th Guards Rifle Division) its regiments respectively got new numbers: 19th, 23rd and 30th Guards Rifle Regiments

    Regards
    Alex

As a rule the unit nubering always changed when it was awarded the "Guard" status.
      Kind regards

The 8th Guards Rifle Division was assigned the following sub-units during the war:
          19th Guards Rifle Regiment
          23rd Guards Rifle Regiment
          30th Guards Rifle Regiment
          27th Guards Artillery Regiment
          5th Guards Antitank Battalion
13th Guards Antiaircraft Battery (until 20 May 43)
19th Guards Mortar Battalion (until 20 Oct 42)
          15th Guards Reconnaissance Company
          2nd Guards Sapper Battalion
          55th Guards Signal Battalion
          (OR 1st Guards Signal Battalion)
476th Medical Battalion (OR 6th Medical Battalion)
          10th Guards Chemical (Defense) Company
478th Truck Company (OR 3rd Truck Company)
606th Field Bakery (OR 4th Field Bakery)
564th Divisional Veterinary Hospital (OR 7th)
          81043rd Field Post Office (OR 993rd )
          826th Field State Bank
(where there are alternatives given, it indicates that the unit changed designations or was replaced by another sub-unit at some time during the war; the first unit listed in the line is the sub-unit that ended the war in the division)

However, while the division was redesignated from the 316th Rifle Division on 18 November 1941; the subordinate regiments, battalions and companies did not receive their Guards designations until 23 February 1942, so there was a period of about two months when the old (316th Rifle) sub-unit designations were used with a 'Guards' prefix attached. I have found a number of Guards divisions where this happened, and consequently even in Soviet sources there is sometimes confusion on the actual designations of the subordinate units in those formations during the transition period.
