    If only there was a way to straighten out exactly where they were fighting, closer to the city, or Gumrak, which of course is much further out. In the Soviet film Stalingrad, this scene is depicted in flat, open country. I don't know how accurate that film was according to details though.

      Oh, you know that wikipedia - they have Beevor as the first source . Of course it was not near Gumrak. It's known that 16th Panzer Div approached to the city from the north. 1077th AA Reg stayed in northernmost suburbs - just to the north from STZ.

        Damn I should have read that. Actually this is the lesser of two major mistakes I made recently. I accidentily referred to Beevor and Max Hastings as "historians".

            Errrr.....I get this message:

            Access Denied by ArjLover

                    I'm not sure, I'm really bad at judging time zones because I come from one of the few places on Earth that doesn't do Daylight Savings Time(Arizona).

                            Playing the thread necromancer here a little bit. I have a new acquaintance who made the most awesome video about a female Russian sniper named Roza Shanina. Check it out:

                            http://www.rozashanina.com/

                            I may do a write-up of female Russian snipers the way I did pilots if I can find time.

                              Rather than start a separate thread (though it may have merit to do so for the attention draw), here's another item on the internet that has popped up recently;
                              Lady Death: Lyudmila Pavlichenko, the Greatest Female Sniper of All Time

                              With 309 confirmed kills, she became a heroic figure to the Soviets—but the American media didn't know what to make of her.

                                A recent issue of "WWII Quarterly", Fall 2019, also had an article on Soviet female snipers. Not finding it at their website, but still an interesting source;
