“We were not at home for a long time…”

It is a very good song about the time when WWII in Europe was finishing and soldiers began to think how they will return home.

“We were not at home for a long time…”

    (Translated by Andrey)

    Candle end is shining,
    Combat is thundering not far.
Fill, my friend, one our front cup
    With some alcohol for everyone!
Let’s do not spend any time in vain,
    Let’s talk with you
    As friends and plainly.

We were not at home for a long time.
A fir is noisy over a river
At another end of the world
    Like in a fairy tale.
    Its needles are new,
    And all the fir’s cones
    Are honeyed.

    Girls-beauties are walking
Without guys for the some last years
In the place where the firs fall,
    Where the firs stand.
It seems for the girls without us
That the moon is soiled by soot
    And stars don't shine.

For what are early lovages to the girls,
If guys are at the war -
    In Germany, in Germany,
    In a far land...
    Fly, soldier’s dream,
    To the most tender girl
    Who remembers about me.

    Candle end is shining,
    Combat is thundering not far.
Fill, my friend, one our front cup
    With some alcohol for everyone!..

    "Davno my doma ne byli"

    Gorit svechi ogarochek,
    Gremit nedal'nii boi.
    Nalei, druzhok, po charochke,
    Po nashei, frontovoi!
    Ne tratia vremia popustu,
    Po-druzheski da poprostu
    Pogovorim s toboi.

    Davno my doma ne byli.
    Shumit nad rechkoi el',
    Kak budto v skazke-nebyli,
    Za trideviat' zemel'.
    Na nei igolki novye,
    I shishki vse elovye,
    Medovye na nei.

    Gde iolki osypaiutsia,
    Gde iolochki stoiat,
    Kotoryi god krasavitsy
    Guliaiut bez rebiat.
    Bez nas devchatam kazhetsia,
    Chto mesiats sazhei mazhetsia,
    A zviozdy ne goriat.

    Zachem im zor'ki rannie,
    Kol' parni na voine -
    V Germanii, v Germanii,
    V daliokoi storone...
    Leti, mechta soldatskaia,
    K divchine samoi laskovoi,
    Chto pomnit obo mne.

    Gorit svechi ogarochek,
    Gremit nedal'nii boi.
    Nalei, druzhok, po charochke,
    Po nashei, frontovoi!..

The song from the movie “In the zone of an additional attention”

I have to admit that I do not know the real name of this song. It is the song from the movie “In the zone of an additional attention” (“V zone osobogo vnimaniia”).

This movie was made in the 70th years. This movie became the real hymn to the Airborne Troops. It was a very popular movie, the Russian TV often shows it in Day of Airborne Troops (on August, 2nd). It is about manoures of the modern army (of the Soviet Army). One scout group of Airborne soldiers landed in the rear of “an enemy” and has the order to identify the location of the “enemy's” headquarters. In the end of the movie they found it and an Airborne Regiment (or Division?) was airdropped directly over this “enemy's” headquarters. This song is singing while many transport planes are throwing away the large amount of Airborne soldiers, all the sky was filled by white parachutes. It is possible to hear the claps of parachutes during the listening of the song.

The Airborne Troops were the most elite troops of Soviet Army in the 70th-80th years and stay elite troops now. The commander of the Airborne Troops of that time was General Morgelov, he could enhance the prestige of the Airborne Troops up to an unprecedented scale and is considered a real hero in the Soviet and in the modern Russian Airborne Troops. The Soviet/Russian Airborne Troops are the best troops of USSR and Russia, they took part in all wars and conflicts. The soldiers and the officers of Airborne Troops are very proud that they serve or served in the Airborne Troops.

The signs of Soviet/Russian Airborne soldiers are a pale blue beret and a striped vest with pale blue stripes.

Commonly the Soviet/Russian Airborne Troops is the same like US Marines if to speak about their morale, training level and relation of its soldiers to it.

The song from the movie “In the zone of an additional attention”

      (Translated by Andrey)

      You went just recently
At the 10th class of a school [1]
      And checked your wrist-watches
With the ringing of school bells.
But now, guys, become accustomed to the Airborne,
      Blowing by all winds Troops!

But now, guys, become accustomed to the Airborne,
But now, guys, become accustomed to the Airborne,
      Blowing by all winds
      Troops!

      Do not blame that
      Weather is inclement,
      Do not consider that
A commander is strict for no any reasons.
You have only two years [2]
For which you, yesterday’s youths, will turn into men.

      You have only two years
      You have only two years
For which you, yesterday’s youths, will turn
      Into men!

You, guys, will carry this uniform
      For not a long time.
But even when your temples will become gray-hared
      You will always have
The hardening which you got in the Airborne,
      Blowing by all winds Troops!

The hardening which you got in the Airborne,
The hardening which you got in the Airborne,
      Blowing by all winds
      Troops!

      Remarks of Andrey:
[1] – "10th class" - the last class of Soviet school (for 16-17-years schoolchildren)
[2] – An every citizen of USSR/Russia must to serve 2 years in the Army or 3 years in the Navy, they can be drafted when their age is from 18 to 27 years old (there are some different postponements, if you have no postponement so you will go in the Army in the age of 18 years old)

        “The fog”

It is a song from the movie “The chronicle of the diving bomber” about some days of the life of a crew of a Pe-2 diving bomber.

        “The fog”

        (translated by Andrey)

It is a fog, it is a fog -
It is a blind shroud around.
But a war is only in two steps
        Behind of the fogs.
        And combats thunder without us
But we are not guilty that we are not fighting now -
We are chained to a ground by the fog,
We are the aerial workers of a war!

It is a fog, it is a fog -
It is on the past, on all our previous life.
And our home is far away, it is far away
        Behind of the fogs.
        And we dream our childhood
        In our front earth-house -
It looks like all we have matured too early,
We are the aerial workers of a war!

It is a fog, it is a fog -
        It covered a ground again.
And our love is far away, it is far away,
        Behind of the fogs
Our fiancees will wait us from an alien land
        For a long time,
And not all we shall return from a flight,
We are the aerial workers of a war!

        "Tuman"

        Tuman, tuman -
        Slepaia pelena.
        A vsego v dvukh shagakh
        Za tumanami voina.
        I gremiat boi bez nas,
No za nami net viny -
        My k zemle prikovany tumanom,
        Vozdushnye rabochie voiny!

        Tuman, tuman
        Na proshlom, na bylom.
        Daleko, daleko
        Za tumanami nash dom.
        A v zemlianke frontovoi
Nam pro detstvo sniatsia sny -
        Vidno vse my rano povzrosleli,
        Vozdushnye rabochie voiny!

        Tuman, tuman
        Okutal zemliu vnov'.
        Daleko, daleko
        Za tumanami liubov'.
        Dolgo nas nevestam zhdat'
        S chuzhedal'nei storony,
My ne vse verniomsia iz poliota,
        Vozdushnye rabochie voiny!

"The White Army, the Black baron"

It is a well known song of the Civil War time.

          "White Army, Black Baron"

          (Translated by Andrey)

The White Army and the Black Baron [1]
Are preparing Tsar's throne [2] for us again.
But Red Army is the strongest army
In all the territory from the taiga to the British seas [3].

          Refrain (2 times):
          So let Red Army men
          Will compress imperiously
Their bayonets with their horny arms. [4]
And all we have to go
Irrepressibly in our last mortal combat!

Red Army, go forward, go forward!
RevVoenSovet [5] calls us in a combat.
You know that Red Army is the strongest army
In all the territory from the taiga to the British seas.

          Repeat refrain (2 times):

The White Army and the Black Baron
Are preparing Tsar's throne for us again.
But Red Army is the strongest army
In all the territory from the taiga to the British seas.

          Repeat refrain (2 times):

          1918 (in other sources - 1920)

          Remarks of Andrey
[1] - "Whites" - anti-Communist Forces, "Black Baron" - hmm, nevertheless I suppose that it is a version of 1920. White Forces in the south of Russia were under command of Baron Vrangel', some elite White regiments had a black uniform in 1920. And I suppose it is the reason of the term "Black Baron".
[2] - it means "want to return Monarchy" here
[3] - "the British Seas" means "seas nearly Britain" here, "the taiga" means "Russian Far East and Eastern Siberia".
[4] "with their horny arms" - it means that Red Army consists of workers and peasants who usually have horny arms
[5] "RevVoenSovet" is the abbreviation of the term"Revolutionary Military Council", sometimes it was called very shortly "RVS".
All the units from an Army scale and higher were under command of not a commander but of the "RevVoenSovet" which consisted usually of the commander of a unit, of the commissar of a unit, of the chief of staff of a unit and, may be, of some other people. ]
So, for an example, it was possible to read that "the RevVoenSovet of the 6th Army ordered ..." or "This order was signed by the RVS of the Western Front"

          "Belaia Armiia, Chiornyi Baron"

          Belaia armiia, Chiornyi baron
          Snova gotoviat nam tsarskii tron,
No ot taigi do britanskikh morei
          Krasnaia Armiia vsekh sil'nei.

          Pripev (2 raza ):
          Tak pust' zhe Krasnaia
          Szhimaet vlastno
          Svoi shtyk mozolistoi rukoi,
          I vse dolzhny my
          Neuderzhimo
          Idti v poslednii smertnyi boi!

          Krasnaia Armiia, marsh, marsh vperiod!
          Revvoensovet nas v boi zoviot.
Ved' ot taigi do britanskikh morei
          Krasnaia Armiia vsekh sil'nei!

          Pripev (2 raza ).

          Belaia armiia, Chiornyi baron
          Snova gotoviat nam tsarskii tron,
No ot taigi do britanskikh morei
          Krasnaia Armiia vsekh sil'nei.

            "The Internationale"

It is the hymn of Communists. But it is necessary to remember that this song was the hymn of USSR up to 1944. And this song (and music) were very famous.

The phrase from this song "Это есть наш последний и решительный бой." ("It is our last resolute combat.") very well harmonizes with music and "The Internationale" became the symbol of the fighting to the last.

Soviet soldiers singed "The Internationale" in surrounded bunkers, in immobilized tanks and so on when they had no any chance to escape and when the Germans screamed: "Russians, surrender!". If the Soviet soldiers singed "The Internationale" in such a situation it meant that they decided to fight to the last but to not surrender.

When I was getting a military education in a university we studied T-72 tank. A student asked what is the destination of a handle in the inner side of the cover of tank hatch. This handle could to lock the cover from inside of the tank so it was impossible to open this hatch from outside of the tank. Our colonel answered: "This handle is called "Lock it and sing "The Internationale". Of course, it was the unofficial, joking name of that handle. The colonel explained to us that this handle is designed for locking tank hatch if tank is immobilized and is surrounded by enemies.

Also this music had much great impression. I read a story which was told by a WWII veteran. Soviet troops were defeated in the Crimea in the region of Kerch in May of 1942. They had no a way to retreat, a sea was in their rear. The Germans broke the Soviet defense, the Soviet troops retreated, they run away, all the system of the defense was broken. The veteran recalls that he with the some separate groups of soldiers went to the coast of a sea. There was no more a way to retreat. He have taken his pistol and decided that when the Germans will arrive closely he will fire the last bullet in his heart. Suddenly a sailor said: "Guys, let's die like men, let's attack Germans and die in a combat". Some soldiers and sailors gathered nearly this sailor and decided to counterattack. They went on the direction of the Germans and suddenly they heard music. A military orchestra played the music of "The Internationale". This music brought so a strong pressure to the bears of the soldiers that this group began the counterattack and new, and new soldiers and sailors joined to them. As a result of it the Germans were repelled with this spontaneous counterattack and many soldiers and sailors could escape later with the help of the some Soviet small ships which unexpectedly approached to the coast later. The veteran said that "The Internationale" and the unknown orchestra saved his life.

            "The Internationale"

            (Translated by Andrey)

            Arise, stamped by a damnation,
All the world of hungry people and of slaves!
            Our indignant mind is boiling
And is ready to lead us in a mortal combat.
We shall destroy all the world of violence
            To its basis.
And then we shall build our new world
Where the persons who were "nothing" will become "everything"!

            Refrain (2 times):
            It is our last
            Resolute combat.
            The humanity will cheer up
            With the Internationale!

Nobody - neither the God, nor the Tsar, nor a hero -
Will give a deliverance to us.
            We shall achieve our liberation
            By our own hands.
If you want to overthrow an oppression by a skillful hand,
If you want to win back your property,
Let blow up a furnace and strike boldly
            While the iron is hot!

            Repeat refrain (2 times).

Only we, workers of the world-wide
            Great army of Labor,
Have right to be owners of a land,
But parasites have no such right!
And if it will be the clap of a thunder
Over the gang of dogs and butchers
The sun will continue to shine
By the light of its rays to us.

            Repeat refrain (2 times).

            "Internatsional"

            Vstavai, prokliat'em zakleimionnyi,
            Ves' mir golodnykh i rabov!
            Kipit nash razum vozmushchionnyi

            Ves' mir nasil'ia my razrushim
            Do osnovan'ia, a zatem
My nash, my novyi mir postroim,
Kto byl nikem, tot stanet vsem!

            Pripev (2 raza ):
            Eto est' nash poslednii
            I reshitel'nyi boi,
            S Internatsionalom
            Vosprianet rod liudskoi!

            Nikto ne dast nam izbavlen'ia:
Ni bog, ni tsar' i ne geroi.
            Dob'iomsia my osvobozhden'ia
            Svoeiu sobstvennoi rukoi.
            Chtob svergnut' gniot rukoi umeloi,
            Otvoevat' svoio dobro, -
            Vzduvaite gorn i kuite smelo,
            Poka zhelezo goriacho!

            Pripev (2 raza ).

            Lish' my, rabotniki vsemirnoi
            Velikoi armii truda!
            Vladet' zemlioi imeem pravo,

Dlia nas vsio tak zhe solntse stanet

              "March of Budionnyi cavalrymen"
              ("We are Red cavalrymen")

It is a very well known dashing song, it was very popular in USSR before WWII.

              "March of Budionnyi cavalrymen"
              ("We are Red cavalrymen")

              (Translated by Andrey)

              We are Red cavalrymen,
              And talkative Russian epic singers
              Are telling the story
              About us.
They speak how boldly and proudly we go in a combat
              And in the clear night,
              And in the rainy days!

              Refrain:
Lead us, Budionnyi, bolder in a combat! [1]
Despite the fact that a thunder resounds,
Despite the fact that a conflagration is around,
              All we are unselfish heroes
And all our life is a struggle.

              Budionnyi is our brother,
All people is together with us
We have the order to not be dejected
              And to look forward!
              You know that Voroshilov,[2]
The best Red officer, is together with us.
We are able and know how to shed our blood for USSR!

              Repeat refrain.

A red banner flutters high up in the clear sky,
We are rushing on the enemy, in the place where the enemy is seen.
And it was after the ravishing battle,
Where we were like an impetuous avalanche
And where we were going with the slogans "Let's go forward on Warsaw" and "Let's go forward on Berlin",
When we cut into the Crimea![3]

              Repeat refrain (2 times).

              1922-27

              Remarks of Andrey:
[1] Budionnyi was the famous in USSR Hero of the Civil War, he was the commander of the very famous 1st Horse Army, a huge Cavalry formation.
Before WWII Budionnyi had rank the Marshal of Soviet Union, during the war he was not a successful commander.
[2] Voroshilov was the other famous in USSR Hero of the Civil War, the friend of Budionnyi, he also was one of the commanders of the 1st Horse Army.
Before WWII Voroshilov had rank the Marshal of Soviet Union, the glory of Voroshilov was very large. There was the special sign "Voroshilov's shooter", good civilian rifle shooters were awarded by this sign, it meant "to fire so good like Voroshilov do it".
In 1939 Voroshilov was People Commissar (Minister) of the Defense but after the Finnish Campaign he was replaced on this post by Marshal Timoshenko.
[3] It is about events of the Civil war where the 1st Horse Army took active part.
In 1919 Poland invaded in Soviet Russia and captured large territories including Kiev. Red Army made the large offensive in the summer of 1920 and broke Polish units. The 1st Horse Army took active part in this offensive. Red Army repelled Poles to the borders of Poland and continue its advance into Polish territory. Red Army men had slogan "Let's go forward on Warsaw". But Poles gathered their forces in the region of the Vistula River and made a successful counteroffensive. Red Army was repulsed from Warsaw and had to retreat. (Soviet Union lost the ancient Russian lands - Western Ukraine and Western Byelorussia – as a result of the peace treaty with Poland in that time (these lands were returned to USSR in 1939).)
"Let's go forward on Berlin"… hmm, I suppose that it was the slogan of time of the successful advance to Warsaw when everyone believed that Poland is completely
broken and a road on Berlin is open.
"the Crimea"… After the end of the Soviet-Polish war the 1st Horse Army was sent in the Crimea where the last White forces (excluding Far East of Russia) defended. In 1921 Red Army made a successful advance in the Crimea and the last Whites evacuated from the Crimea in Turkey by a sea transport. The 1st Horse Army took part in this advance.

                "Song of Horse Army men"

It is a very famous song which was popular in 30th years.

                "Song of Horse Army men"

                (Translated by Andrey)

                It was combat Eighteenth year.[1]
                It was time
                Of struggle and alarms.
Our preparing to a march was not long -
We raised horses from Kuban' to Volga [2]
                For campaign.
                Chorus:
Our preparing to a march was not long -
We raised horses from Kuban' to Volga
                For a campaign.

We with Budennyy [3] rode at a trot
                Between hot and dust
                In great actions.
                Our loud glory went
                Through humpbacked barrows
                And through river rifts.
                Chorus:
                Our loud glory went
                Through humpbacked barrows
                And through river rifts.

                White bones molder
                In Don and Zamost'e, [4]
Winds are noisy over the bones.
                Dogs-atamans [5] remember,
                Polish pans [6] remember
Our the might of the sabres of our Horse Army.
                Chorus:
                Dogs-atamans remember,
                Polish pans remember
Our the might of the sabres of our Horse Army.

                Chorus:
                If new wars will come
                In our calm land
                Like machinegun downpour,
So we shall ride on our battle horses
                Along known roads
                After dear NarCom [7].
So we shall ride on our battle horses
                Along known roads
                After dear NarCom.

                1935

                Remarks of Andrey:
[1] – the Russian Civil War between Reds and Whites has began in 1918.
[2] – “Don” means region nearly the Don River, “Kuban'” is a region of Russia to the North West from the Caucasus
[3] Budennyy was the famous commander of the famous 1st Horse Army. The 1st Horse Army was a legendary Cavalry formation of Reds of Civil War time .
[4] Don is the famous place where Cossacks live, most part of the Cossacks supported Whites so it was place of large combats between Reds and Whites. Zamost'e is place in the West of Byelorussia where combats between Reds and Polish troops occurred.
[5] "dogs-atamans"… If to speak simply so the Cossack's general was called "ataman", the Cossacks fought in White troops against Communists. Large combats between Red Cavalry including the 1st Horse Army and the Cossack White Cavalry were in the regions of southern Russia. In the end Reds won as a result of the supremacy in the amount of troops. "Dogs-atamans remember" means that Cossack White Leaders remember how Red Cavalry beated them.
[6] "Polish pans"… Polish landlords were called "pans". It is about events of the Soviet-Polish war of 1919-20 when Red Cavalry including the 1st Horse Army firstly advanced successfully and repelled Polish troops from Russian territory to the Vistula River.
[7] NarCom is abbreviation from "Narodnyy Comissar" ("People Commisar"). All the ministers in USSR were called "People Commisar" in 30th years. It is about Voroshilov here, he was one of the leaders of the 1st Horse Army during the Civil War, in 30th years he was the NarCom of the Defence of USSR.

It is a very famous pre-revolutionary song.

                  Hmm… About details

It is dashing revolutionary sailor’s song.

As I know it had many couplets-chastooshkas (verses which were made by ordinary people). (I heard in it in famous movie “Dog’s heart”).

Usually such couplets began with rows:

                  “Eh, apple,
And you are on the plate…”

                  “Эх, яблочко,
                  Да на тарелочке…”

                    “Cranes”

It is a very famous sad song.

                    “Cranes”

                    (translation of Andrey)

It sometimes seemed to me that the soldiers,
Who didn’t return from bloody fields,
Didn’t lie down into our ground
                    But turned into white cranes.
And they are flying and are screaming their voices to us now
And they do it from that old time.
May be it is the reason why we often stop talking ruefully
                    When we look in sky.

The weary wedge of cranes is flying in sky,
It flies in the end of the day.
And there is a small interval inside this wedge
May be, it is a place for me.
May be, it will be a day and I shall fly
With the flock of cranes in the same blue sky
And I shall call everyone, whose I left in a ground,
From the sky by on the language of birds.

                      “Evening in the roadstead”

It is sailor’s famous song of WWII time.

                      “Evening in the roadstead”

                      (Translated by Andrey)

Let’s sing, friends, we shall go in a campaign tomorrow
During the fog, which will be before the dawn.
Let’s sing more merry, let our gray-haired battle-tried captain
Will join us in the singing.

                      Refrain:
                      Good bye, dear city,
We shall go in a sea tomorrow.
And it will be early time of a day
When a known pale blue kerchief
Will appear for a moment behind the stern.

And evening is such pretty again
That it is impossible to not sing songs.
                      Let’s sing, friends, more harmoniously
About intimate friendship, about a navy service.

                      Repeat refrain.

It became silent on the large roadstead,
                      A fog enveloped a sea.
And a wave is kissing the dear coast,
And only a bayan [1] is playing quietly:

                      Repeat refrain.

                      1942

                      Remarks of Andrey:
[1] bayan is a type of an accordion

                      "Vecher na reide"

Spoiomte, druz'ia, ved' zavtra v pokhod
                      Uidiom v predrassvetnyi tuman,
                      Spoem veselei, pust' nam podpoiot
                      Sedoi boevoi kapitan.

                      Pripev:
                      Proshchai, liubimyi gorod,
                      Ukhodim zavtra v more.
                      I rannei poroi
                      Mel'kniot za kormoi
                      Znakomyi platok goluboi.

                      A vecher opiat' khoroshii takoi,
Chto pesen ne pet' nam nel'zia.
                      O druzhbe bol'shoi, o sluzhbe morskoi
                      Podtianem druzhnee, druz'ia.

                      Pripev.

                      Na reide bol'shom legla tishina,
                      A more okutal tuman.
                      I bereg rodnoi tseluet volna,
                      I tikho donosit baian:

                      Pripev.

                        “And who does know”

This song was popular in WWII time. It is not about a war but this song recalled soldiers about their home.

This song is made in the style of traditional, old, Russian people songs; the voices of woman’s chorus are excellent. It is a real pleasure to listen it.

                        “And who does know”

                        (Translated by Andrey)

A guy goes in the sunset
                        Nearly my home.
He usually blinks eyes for me
                        But doesn’t speak anything.
                        And who does know
                        Why does he blink?

When I shall come in the dance club -
                        He dances and sings,
But when we speak goodbye nearly my gate
                        He turns away and sighs.
                        And who does know
                        Why does he sigh?

I asked, “Why are you joyless?
                        Don’t you like your life?”
                        “I lost,” he answers,
                        “My poor heart.”
                        And who does know
                        Why does he lose?

And he sent me two enigmatical letters
                        With a post yesterday.
There are only dots in the every row
I understood it so that I have to guess myself what it means.
                        And who does know
What does he make hints about?

                        I didn’t become to guess
So do not hope and wait!
                        But the heart sweetly melted
Inside my breast for some reason.
                        And who does know
                        Why does he blink?
                        Why does it melt?

                        "I kto ego znaet"

                        Na zakate khodit paren'
                        Vozle doma moego.
                        Pomorgaet mne glazami

                        I kto ego znaet,
                        Chego on vzdykhaet?

                        Ia sprosila: "Chto ne vesel?

                        "Poterial ia, - otvechaet, -

                        I kto ego znaet,

                          “There is only moment”

It is the song of the 70th years from the movie “Sannikov's Land”. I heard that this song was a favorite song of the Russian officers in the Chechen War.

                          “There is only a moment”

                          (Translated by Andrey)

Everything is ghostly in this blustery World
There is only a moment so hold on to it.
There is only a moment between past and future
And exactly this moment is called a life.

It is unlikely that eternal peace will gladden a heart,
Eternal peace is for gray-haired cairns.
But there only a moment – a dazzling moment,-
For the star which is falling.

Let this World will rush far through centuries
But our ways are not always on the way with it.
And I value and run risk with only one thing in the World,
This thing is one moment, only one moment.

Everyone will have and happiness, and misfortune in the life,
There is only a moment so hold on to it.
There is only a moment between past and future
And exactly this moment is called a life.

                          • ATTENTION!!!

I corrected practically all the translations and I hope that they became more understandable (I got some knowledge how to use the articles).

                            • ATTENTION!

Uff... I corrected some more songs and I can to say now - ALL text of the song are corrected.

I used a "translit" instead of the original Russian texts in Cyrillyc letters. "Translit" means replacing Cyrillyc letters by English letters.

Draw in attention that there are some different tables of replacement, I used the system which is used in mail.yandex.ru and which is the most close to the Russian letters (according my opinion). So it is possible to find the different "translit" version of the same Russian word.

And draw attention that I replaced Russian letters by latin letters, not Russian sounds. In some cases sounds differ from letters, for an example, we write "Moskva" ("Moscow") but we speak "Maskva".

If some moments are not understandable you can say about it and I shall try to explain it.
