  • Volkhov Drinking song

    Music: I. Lyuban Lyrics: P.Shubin

It's a half-dirge, half-drinking song - something truly Russian. Originally it was a drinking song written in the praise of Stalin in 1942, but in January 1943, following the operation "Spark", it was rewritten by P. Shubin, a military correspondent of "Volkhov Pravda".

It not so often we get together, friends
But if we've got this chance now
Let us remember the past and drink as we should
As is the rite of our Rus'

May a Leningrad family sit next to us here
    At our big dinner table
Let us remember how Russian soldiers' might
    Drove the Germans beyond Tikhvin

Let's drink to those who stayed in their dugouts
    Freezing for many long weeks
Who fought on Ladoga, who fought on Volkhov
Who never made one step back

Let's drink to those who took charge of companies
Those who died on the snow
Those who waded through swamps to Leningrad
    Breaking the enemy's throat.

Let their glory be the lore of the centuries
    As under machine-gun hail
Thrust our bayonets on the hills of Sinyavino
    Fought our regiments at Mga

So let us stand up and clink our cups now
Let's stand up, brothers in arms.
Let's drink to the courage of fallen heroes
Let's drink to the meeting of the living

            • For all the life we're left to live

Sister, remember, how you pulled me
Out of the battle to sanbat
We stayed alive that time, me and you,
              My comrade and my brother.
For all the life we're left to live
We'll have enough heroic feats and glory
              And victory over bloody enemy
For all the life we're left to live
For all the life we're left to live

There burned Dnieper, Neva and Volga
              There burned heavens and fields...
A single grief, a single worry
The only fate, the only land
For all the life we're left to live
We'll have enough grief and sorrow
Where are those who we have lost
For all the life we're left to live

Sister and brother... By our mutual faith
              We gained our double strength
We were all walking towards love and mercy
              In that uncharitable war
For all the life we're left to live
              Let's remember the fronline brotherhood
              Like a sacred testament
For all the life we're left to live...
For all the life we're left to live

              [sanbat - medical batallion]

Звездопад was a really weird record, but I think this was the best song on it.

In fact I got quite disappointed with Letov after this album. As his later records showed, not without reason. Still he's one of the greatest Soviet/Russian "rock" musicians of the 1980-90s.

Yeah, he went in that acid rock direction I didn't like, and really weird political things in the manner that they changed every 5 minutes, but the 80's and early 90's stuff was killer.

                      • The Leningrad little song (The Leningraders)

                        Music: A. Lepin
                        Lyrics: P. Shubin

Wherever I would be thrown by the war
                        Amid charred and smoked fields,
I still dream of the moonlit garden
And of ships' horn by the sea coast

                        Ref:
In the evening Neva waves are
                        Splashing quietly.
                        My Leningrad, dear brother
                        My Motherland!

All that you whispered me when we parted
Forever became dear to my heart
                        Only the white night fluttered
Over the laces of Liteyny bridge

                        Ref

                        I know, I know, canonade's thundering
Where we used to stroll together with you
Our youth went to the field of battle
To the bursts of German shells

But we fear neither death nor the blockade
And through the evening gardens of Leningrad
                        Just like this little song
                        Our indesctructible love will walk

                        Ref.

                        1943
