  • March 1942, Eastern front

    Hi All,

Does anybody know where I can find detail description of events happenning in March 1942 in the estern front in Russia? I would like to know which units from both Russian and German side were participating, etc.

My grandfather died in Kostrovo (Moskow region) in March 1942, but I do not know his unit or any other details, so I was hoping to figure this out somehow by searching online resources

    Thank you

Kostrovo is a small settlement around 8 km west of the town of Istra, which - in turn - is around 40 km west-north-west of Moscow.
Considering the time and the location, he probably served in either the Soviet 5th or 16th Armies.
However, you will probably have to wait for Alex to get back in order to obtain any concrete information.

Kostrovo was blocked on March 7 by the 354th RD of the 5th Army/Western Front and captured at night 8/9 March 1942

To elaborate a bit, the 354th Rifle Division was formed north of the then-city of Kuibyshev in the Volga Military District in August-October 1941, sent to the front at the end of November 1941 to take part in the Moscow Counteroffensive. In March 1942 it consisted of:

          1199th Rifle Regiment
          1201st Rifle Regiment
          1203rd Rifle Regiment
          921st Artillery Regiment
          274th Antitank Battalion
          645th Antiaircraft Battalion
          412th Mortar Battalion
          420th Reconnaissance Company
          476th Sapper Battalion
          809th Signal Company
          443rd Medical Battalion
          436th Chemical (Defense) Company
          473rd Transport (Truck) Company
          212th Field Bakery
          778th Divisional Veterinary Hospital
          355th Field Post Office
          788th Field State Bank

With the exception of 7 days in February 1943, the division was assigned to the active fronts and armies fighting the Germans for the entire war. By the end of the war, it had received the Order of the Red Banner on 5 July 1944, the Order of Suvorov on 27 July 1944, the Order of Lenin on 4 June 1945, and the honorific title: "Kalinkovichskaya" for the liberation of Kalinkovichi in January 1944.
