Midget Subs Are Here To Stay

The first hostile act against the United States in World War Two may have been the penetration of Pearl Harbor by two Japanese midget submarines. More recently, the South Korean frigate Cheoan was sunk in the Yellow Sea by a torpedo almost certainly fired by a North Korean midget sub. In coastal waters midget subs are very difficult to detect and so make very potent ambush and coastal defense weapons. Since they can carry the most modern and powerful torpedoes available (although not many of them), they are potent threats which don’t get much press.

Here is a link to an article in Popular Mechanics discussing U.S. Navy responses to the threat.
