  • F35 JSF Go For Carriers Probably

The F35B Joint Strike Fighter has been tagged for USMC service and would operate from carriers, including light carriers currently flying Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing (STOVL) Harriers. There have been some concerns that the vectored thruster exhaust for the F35B was so hot it would melt the flight deck, or at least cause some distortions and accelerated wear.

Marine Commandant Gen. James Conway recently put those fears to rest. F35B’s exhaust temperature is about 1500 degrees, which is plenty ht, but it’s only 18 degrees hotter than the Harrier, so won’t cause any problems for vessels currently carrying the older aircraft.
