  • The Real Casualty Toll of Afghanistan

    Are US losses in Afghanistan 849? Or are they over 1000? That depends on who you count. We have lost 849 soldiers there, but we have also lost 249 civilian contractors. Since that’s more than a third of our total military losses, you would think it would be worth talking about Ė or at least knowing about. Instead it’s hard to get a handle on the total number of contractor deaths there. The only current measure we have is a system linked to workman’s comp claims. (Really.) We are supposed to have a dedicate data base in place to track contractor casualties but it still isnít up and running.
