Rapidly - many contracts were simply cancelled.

Some companies went for alternative products (Boeing vastly expanded into civil aviation, Bendix stopped making gun-turrets and started making washing-machines) and some just went to the wall (Curtis, one of the oldest names in US Aviation simply collapsed).

Of course, this is nothing new. After the ACW, small-arms manufacturer Remington adapted their production-line to produce a legendary range of typewriters.

It's a safe bet that many jobs were shed in any case.
    Indyref2 - still, "Yes."
