  • "Oxygen Free" Animals discovered

Looks like they found the first animals that can exist without oxygen on the ocean floor.

Scientists have found the first animals that can survive and reproduce entirely without oxygen, deep on the floor of the Mediterranean Sea.

The team, led by Roberto Danovaro from Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona, Italy, found three new species from the Loricifera group.

He told BBC World Service they were about a millimetre in size and looked like jellyfish in a protective shell.

I saw this, and it's very interesting. For one thing, it means that life is possible outside of the narrow environmental envelope that sustains us.

This is very interesting. Finding life is such extreme conditions has a lot implications. Plus I had no idea the Mediterranean was so deep in places--3.5 km. Off to Google Earth!

When life first formed on earth, the atmosphere consisted of mostly carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia, sulfur dioxide, nitrates, nitrogen, water vapor. There was no oxygen present. Oxygen was generated by photosynthesis as a waste product from those early life forms.

The oxygen free animal discovered is probably something left over from the pre oxygen atmosphere earth that has survived in the oxygen deprived environment of parts of the deep seas.

Like the sunlight free ecosystem of the Mid Ocean Trench, this is more proof that life is capable of taking advantage of many unusual ways to generate the energy needed to thrive.
