  • Air quality has improved in the US

From the Fabius Maximus website: "Good news: air quality in the US has improved!"

Summary: This post will get little traffic, like most that give good news. “If it bleeds, it leads.” Articles about the last faux-doomster news get traffic, re-enforcing the widespread belief that the ecology of the USA slowly (or rapidly) rolls down to Hell. How sad.

Althought a disappointing for “the environment is going to hell” greens, the rest of us can rejoice in this good news.

The longer term term picture shows the progress since the first Earth Day in 1970, esp impressive considering the impressive growth in GDP since then. And the growth of energy consumption and population — both of which the doomsters of 1970 said were utterly incompatible with reduced pollution. From “Our Nation’s Air – Status and Trends through 2008“, EPA, February 2010. This report is a must-read re-education for green doomsters (but few will, of course).

This shouldn't come as a surprise. The loss of much of our manufacture industry is bound to have something positive.

All depends on where you are. Beware of anything that pretends to make a claim for an entire nation or geographical region. Let your own sinuses do the talking.

While it's true that there are local anomalies (parts Red China in particular) the average global air quality has been improving for decades. This is from Mishchenko et al., 2007...

The data are from the Global Aerosol Climatology Project (GACP) and represent the "global optical thickness of tropospheric aerosols" as measured by satellites. The decrease in the optical thickness of the atmosphere is attributed to a global decline in SO2, black carbon, smoke, particulate matter and other anthropogenic aerosol emissions.

The global level of atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) has also been stable or declining over the last couple of decades...

          SOURCE

CO was flat from 1970-1977... Not measured from 1977-1980... And flat from 1980-2000. It may or may not have risen during the gap in measurements.

With as much data as we have regarding CO2, it's kind of shocking that there are so few attempts at global measurements of CO. Maybe it's because every study keeps coming up with the inconvenient fact that atmospheric CO levels are declining...

When I can see the air I'm breathing, quality is ty.

It doesn't matter what the title of the report is.

The average air quality of the entire planet has improved over the last few decades. That would not be possible if the improvement of US air quality was simply the result of manufacturing moving overseas.

Furthermore, US manufacturing capacity and output haven't declined over the last 20 years. It has become a smaller fraction of our over all economy, but it hasn't declined. Our total manufacturing output is almost twice what it was in 1980 despite the steep decline of the recent recession...

It is a little complicated when reports lie.

This is a good trend and I hope it continues!

I don't have any numbers, but I believe a large factor in this improvement is in automotive technologies. In the past 40 years we have eliminated lead based gasoline, added catalytic converters, and made cars more fuel efficient all the way around with improved materials technologies.

As hybrids and electric cars begin to dominate the market in upcoming decades, we should see the clean air trend continue even though cars are becoming more common in 3rd world countries and places like China.

How would that be possible? The air in Tokyo is almost unbreathable.

The air in Bejing was so bad that the Chinese had to ban automobiles completely to clean it up a little for the Olympics.

"Clean Air reports rank about on a par with climatology reports.
