Hi, I am new here and I don't know if I should be doing this. Hope I am in the right place.
I am looking for a soldier from either the vietnem or korean war. I found a little info and it is very confusing.
It says there was a court martial in 1966 and there is an updated decission that was made on 18t March 2009.
Problem is he has been dead for years and was supposedly killed in the war. I have no contact with any of his immediate family but his son who is also dead is the father of two of my grandchildren and i am trying to find his family. Can anyone tell me how to get access to these military files that will explain what happened and why he was court martialled ,
Thanks to anyone who can put me on the right track, Thanks Ratar

Considering the #'s and nt knowing which war is going to make it hard.
The more info that you have the better. Perhaps a good place to start would send the info that you have to the VA. If he was
Court Marshaled in 66 it would sound like he is Viet era vet.

You most likely be getting some more input from other members. Be patient.

I agree on going to the VA. I'm not sure what information they will give you though since court martial hearing records are not available to the public (AFAIK).

You might be able to get more information with his Identification Number, if you have it.
If you can't set a good example, be a glaring warning.

I suspect the Privacy Act will apply as well.

Thanks Janos and Freightshaker for your replies.
I do have his service no and now defenitly know it was Veitnam.
More confused now though , info as follows
            National Archives
Date of Court Martial - 6 April 1966
            Dept of Veteran Affairs
            Service Between: 18/12/1967 and 17/12/1968
The served dates are one year later than the court-martial dates, any ideas how I can clarify this, thanks ratar

            Total Days: 366

The 366 days would be his tour in Vietnam.

Without his DD214, it will be difficult to determine when he was in. If he was Reserve or National Guard, his Reserve/NG time would be calculated separaely from his active time. That might make sense of his duty dates of Dec 67'-Dec 68' but court martial in 66'. He might have been NG/Reserve at that time.

                They will have his records.

Thanks everyone for your help, still not getting anywhere though. Is there any other way apart from post to contact The National Personal Records Centre in St Louis. This is really starting to get to me, I didn't realise it would be so hard to find all these details , my grandson really wants to know about this now so I can't stop now. So many people die because of war and I had never really been affected in a personal way until now. My heart goes out to every soldiers family for the pain they must endure. I can not even start to imagine how they all deal with the missing , the dead and the injured. I just want to say that all this started with me comming across a name of a soldier who could have been my grandmothers brother in 1915. Since then I have been getting information and records on him and because of great forums like this I have managed to find out that the soldier was my nanas brother , he was killed at Gallipoli, I managed to get the file from the battlefield during the battle that he was fighting when he was killed. I don't know how I would have coped if he was my son. It would have been terrifing. It is just very hard, all my immediate family , parents , grandparents etc have died and I don't have anyone alive to ask for information. Now I am in the same situation with this soldier, he was killed , his son died at 23 leaving my grandson , he knows nothing of his fathers family or his grandfather. thank you all again for your help, and pray for a safe return of all our brave and gallant soldiers, ratar

                    This sounds really Bogus.

However, I now work in data acquisition of a sort, and if you are really interested then PM me. I will see what I can find within the law and within relevant personal/data protection acts of specific countries.
