  • Inspiration for Research

Where do you get your inspiration for research topics?

The last two years I had two magazine articles published and I'm eager to branch out and continue my independent scholarship. But the last year and a half I've been hitting the proverbial brick wall.

I get lots of great ideas, start doing some research, only to find out that someone wrote a book making my argument in the last couple of years. It's very frustrating, and has forced me to go from topic to topic to the point of frustration.

What is the trick to finding a unique angle here? I know one way is to go so narrow or so obscure that few people have written about it before, but you're unlikely to get published that way.

Do any of you have tricks for getting around this massive writer's block?
Check out my e-book: The Spanish American War: A Brief History, available at Barnes & Noble, Smashwords and other retailers.
