  • Just plain ugly models (because the real thing was ugly)

Have you ever bought a model, of an item that was just plain ugly in your own view point, but you got it all the same, for some reason ie to fill out a collection and it was a representation of a time or nation etc.

I just bought the recent addition to the Tamiya 1/48th scale line of the Italian Armoured Car AB41.

The AB41 armoured car is in my view ...ugly

Now the kit is looking like it is a good kit. Metal frame piece like so many of the Tamiya 1/48th scale have (not all, but almost all). Plenty of parts. It comes with soft plastic black rubber tires (not sure I like that though). Markings for German use following Italy leaving the war as well.

But the vehicle is itself ...ugly.

I got it because it is the first Italian vehicle I will have in 1/48th scale and actually only the second Italian anything I have bought since the Tamiya M13/40 in 1/35th scale I got years ago.

Thought I needed to get some Italian content on the shelf.
Life is change. Built models for decades.
Not sure anyone here actually knows the real me.
    I didn't for a long time either.

No better no worse than many other AFV from WWII.

Love the air horns on this one.

    So it isn't a Lamborginie

Plenty of my kits are ugly because yes, the real thing was ugly. I don't buy on looks; I buy based on whatever tanks, planes etc are historically required for a particular scenario.

In some perverse way, for some unexplained reason, I sometimes actually like the 'ugly' ones better than the 'attractive' ones.

The New Zealand 'Bob Semple' tank. Pretty ugly in my book.

Our trans-Tasman cousins are very pleasant and likeable folk for the most part but they certainly have their own unique way of doing things.

For a long time I'd thought I would never build a Sherman or an Italian AFV, I was hooked once I made the M13/40, and have a Dragon Sherman 105 mm on the shelf.... times have changed!
