  • Normandy Photos - Batch 3.

This is the final batch - I hope you enjoyed the pictures.

This selection covers "everything else" I took a semi-decent picture of.

    1) For anyone who's watched "The Longest Day" - this is the Chapel at St Mere Eglise where an American Paratrooper got stuck on the steeple. You can see that to this day they still have a dummy Paratrooper hanging from that very spot!

    2) A German Anti-Tank Gun still in its mounting.

    3) Another monument, right next to the gun shown above in (2).

    4) This is one of four large German artillery pieces that fought and lost a duel with the Royal Navy on D-Day.

    5) Another shot of the same gun. These weapons are on a rise above and between Gold and Juno Beaches.

    6) This is the command and control Bunker for the guns, basically consisting of tons of concrete and an observation slit. Communication trenches and wires would have run from this bunker (which was set lower and in front of the guns) to the weapons themselves. This Bunker was used in "The Longest Day". You can see the damage it has taken.

    7) And to round off our tour, here are some shots of the Colleville Cemetery. This is an American cemetery above Omaha. The view across the sea is stunning and it is a really peaceful and restful place to be. It is maintained in IMMACULATE condition.

    8) A view across the expanse of the cemetery.

    9) And finally, an image of some of the headstones - with the soldiers still lined up, on their last and permanent parade, they gave their lives in the name of freedom.

    Regards,

    Dr. S.
