  • Historical Maps for Free (sort of)

In the "Your Tax Dollars at Work Department...."

Stumbled across a really odd but fun US gov't web site operated by NOAA.

They have digitized all sorts of historical charts and maps including battlefields (US Only).

For grins I plugged in keyword "Gettysburg" and four maps (two from 1876) to choose from popped-up. (Remember to scroll-down to see the maps to choose from) I assume they have others as well.

After selecting a map a viewer with zoom and navigation capabilities pops up. I have not found a way to "save" the map but it is a very nice way to blow a few hours.

They also have lake/sea shore charts etc. I figure most of us "battlefield trekers" are also map geeks as well.

Now that is a cool site. I was able to check out the Philippine's (Bataan, Corregidor) from a new angle. Thanks!
