Many years ago I had the good fortune to attend a school in Maryland (Emmitsburg) and on my weekend off I was able to walk and take pictures of the entire battlefield, from day 1 to day 3 (the only exception was a drive to the cavalry battle site). While there I was sitting by the 20th Maine monument on Round Top when I was surprised to find myself talking with Joshua Chamberlain. As it turned out, as you might have guessed, it was a local reenactor walikng the site (dressed as) to get the feel of the terrain. I have to say that walikng the field gave me a sense of the battle more than any book (to include "Killer Angels") would have and the surprise I received on Little Round Top will forever be in my memory.
Luckily I went back to this area four more times and at each visit was able to use my weekend to walk another site. I hope anyone with a love of history and a willingenss to study the military is afforded the same opportunity.
