At the time when we're commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the F&I War and the beginnings of Pittsburgh, this whole fiasco is just even more insane. It would be stupid to cover up this important part of history at any time, but to do it now is just even more stupid. What the city really needs to do is preserve the fort, even reconstruct more of it and turn the area into a historic site and living history museum, much like what has been done with other sites like Jamestown, or Fort Ticonderoga. That would be the fitting way to commemorate the Fort and Pittsburgh's history. It would generate a lot of money from tourism for the city and state, which is all the city and state officials seem to care about anyways.

Classic double speak at its finest -

"The archeological work will not delay renovations. The drain will be preserved and buried for a future excavation project", said Laura Fisher, senior vice president of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, a sponsor of the renovation project. "It will be covered up in the short term," she said, "but what we hope to do is come back and have an active program for archeology in the park."

          Translation -

We are gonna bury this old piece of junk. Im saying the rest to appease the weirdo history buffs in the area as we have no plans to dig up our new park once its finished.
