  • Beating the Martians

In Well's War of the Worlds the Martian fighting machines have an easy time of it against field guns out in the open firing over open sights. But if the British army had resorted to indirect fire from dead ground then the boot would have been on the other foot for the Martian heat ray projectors can only have been capable of direct fire. Moreover, given their rather extended lines of supply, and therefore the limited number of Martians, superior numbers would soon have become an important factor if such tactics were employed. If an envelopment approach was also applied so the Martian machines were under fire from a number of directions their design would seem to have been defective for they seem to have had no form of revolving turret. Some heavy howitzers dropping shells into the Martian pits would soon have finished matters.
I also wonder how long it would have taken terrestrial forces to come up with the reflective armoured shield?

Didn't they hatch from eggs ? Or was that another movie ?

If so - I propose Listeria.

The Martian logistics problem was somewhat circumvented by dropping canisters at will at whatever location they so desired across the globe. As to the durability of their machines it appears a direct hit right in front of the glass dome on top of the tripod was necessary to kill the pilot, else major caliber naval artillery was necessary to stop them despite their spindly legs. The problem the humans faced was reacting fast enough to confront the martians before their machines started their trail of havoc.
