  • New Theory About Trans-Neptunian Objects Fails To Completely Debunk Planet Nine

    ...
Planet Nine is attributed for the strange looping orbits of some of the space rocks at the outer edge of the solar system, the trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). Detached Objects

Known as detached objects, these bodies are not affected by the gravity of Neptune or any other known planet in the solar system, and appear disconnected from the rest of the solar system as they orbit the sun. The idea is that gravity of the yet-to-be seen Planet Nine could be influencing the orbits of these bodies. Planet Nine

A new study presented at the American Astronomical Society in Denver, Colorado, however, offers an alternative explanation for the dynamics of detached objects. It points at gravity of smaller space debris instead.

Researchers calculated the orbits of icy objects at the edge of the solar system. They compared these orbits of these objects to the hands of a clock.

Some of these orbits, such as those that belong to asteroids, move like the minute hand while the orbits of bigger objects move slowly like the hour hand. Eventually, however, these hands meet.

The researchers said that the accumulation of these small scale interactions over many years may be responsible for knocking the objects into their strange orbits. As a result, Sedna's orbit goes from normal to detached due to small-scale interactions.

    • Collision With Massive Object Twice The Size Of Earth Gave Uranus Its Odd Tilt

      ....
A young Uranus was hit by a large object about twice the size of Earth in the early days of the solar system, findings of a new study have revealed.

The collision could also help explain the planet's characteristics, which include an odd tilt and freezing temperatures. Uranus Hit By Young Protoplanet Twice The Size Of Planet Earth

In the new study published in The Astrophysical Journal, Jacob Kegerreis, from Durham University's Institute for Computational Cosmology, and colleagues used a high-powered supercomputer to run simulations of different impact scenarios that would recreate the conditions that shaped the evolution of Uranus.

The results confirmed findings of an earlier study, which said the tilted position of the ice giant was due to a collision with a massive object while the solar system was forming about 4 billion years ago. The object was possibly a young protoplanet about twice as massive as Earth and made of rock and ice.

"The young Uranus was involved in a cataclysmic collision with an object twice the mass of Earth, if not larger, knocking it on to its side and setting in process the events that helped create the planet we see today," Kegerreis said in a statement.

      • Scientists Stunned By a Neanderthal Hybrid Discovered in a Siberian Cave
        ....
A single cave in the mountains of Siberia has produced a string of remarkable archaeological discoveries. In 2008, scientists there found a 41,000-year-old pinky bone, whose DNA matched neither humans nor Neanderthals. Instead, it belonged to a previously unknown group of hominins they named Denisovans. Three Denisovan teeth also turned up in the cave. Since then, traces of Denisovan DNA have been found in humans living today in Asia and Melanesia—suggesting that long ago, humans and Denisovans met, had sex, and had children.

That was, until now, the sum total of our knowledge on the mysterious Denisovans.

A remarkable new discovery—also in the Denisova cave—paints an even more interesting more picture, telling us that Denisovans also interbred with Neanderthals. The evidence is as direct as it can be: a bone fragment in the cave that, according to DNA analysis, belonged to the daughter of a Neanderthal mother and a Denisovan father.

“It’s an amazing, lucky thing to find this individual, wow!” says David Reich. “Who could have imagined we could have been able to witness the hybridization of these two groups basically as it was happening.” Reich, an ancient DNA researcher at Harvard, was not involved in the study, though he has collaborated with the group on other samples from Denisova cave.

                    • The hunt for Planet X turns up a new solar system object

                      ....
(CNN)While searching for the mysterious Planet X that some astronomers believe lurks on the edge of our solar system, researchers instead found an extremely distant object they dubbed "the Goblin." And this object provides compelling evidence for the existence of Planet X.

The object is on the small end of being a dwarf planet, with a 40,000-year orbit -- meaning it takes that long to go around the sun. That's more than 2,000 times the distance between the Earth and the sun. Its current location is about 2˝ times farther from the sun than from Pluto.

"I think we are nearing the 90% likelihood of Planet X being real with this discovery," said Scott Sheppard, an astronomer at the Carnegie Institution for Science.

The Goblin got its nickname because the scientists first observed it around Halloween 2015. It is considered an Inner Oort Cloud object. The Oort Cloud is a predicted bubble around our solar system far beyond Pluto, filled with trillions of icy bodies and the supposed birthplace of long-term comets.

                              • Holy Cow! Astronomers Agog at Mysterious New Supernova

An event known as "Cow" that has rocked astronomy since June likely offers a close look at the birth of a neutron star or black hole
                                ....
Contrary to the slow ramp-up of a typical supernova, Cow became stupendously bright essentially overnight, leaving astronomers perplexed.

“It popped up out of nowhere,” says Stephen Smartt, an astronomer at Queen’s University Belfast, UK, who first discovered the explosion, and who named it according to an alphabetical protocol that just happened to spell out the word ‘cow’.
                                ...
Through independent observations, the two groups behind the latest papers have now arrived at the same conclusion: that a ‘central engine’ has kept agitating the exploding star from the inside for months and that the energy must have come from either a newly formed black hole in the process of accreting matter, or the frenetic rotation of a neutron star.

Black holes and neutron stars are both born when massive stars reach the end of their lives. Explosions such as ‘Cow’—technically, the event AT2018cow—could provide some of the most direct evidence of this type of birth, says Mansi Kasliwal, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena. “I think this is telling us about how to understand the most extreme incarnations of massive-star explosions.”

Iair Arcavi, an astrophysicist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, is impressed by the quality of the latest results, as well as by the strangeness of the event. “Pretty much everything about its emission is something we haven't seen before,” he says.
