  • Alaska the Independent

How do Alaska look now if Russians were better colonists and didn’t sell it.
Can Alaska be a independent country? What history can it have?

To small to be a nation, to big to be an insane asylum....a nod to John C. Calhoun.

Andorrans are the citizens of a state not a nation in and of theirselves. Learn the difference between a state and a nation...there is one.

In land area it might be larger than all of the NATO...so what...the population is around 300,000 and Europe is around...what...300,000,000.

Guys it was a joke...lighten up.

Well, I know difference between nation and people. U.S. citizens aren’t nation too as think in C.I.S.
Andorrans (as a nation) are 6 000, when andorran citizens are 84 129.
But we talk not about it. Alaska don’t “can’t be independent” because someone think that Alaskans can’t be a nation.

P.S. Interesting fact: king of Andorra Boris I (1934) was Byelorussian.

Weird as it seems, there simply were not enough Russians to go around in 1860s, not with all the Empire-building they were doing in the 1800s.

Even today, there are very, very few people there. About half live in and around Anchorage. If it were independant, what would it matter, and to who?

Well... ANWAR would be producing oil, and more than 8% of the land would be in private hands, I guess that's something.

I suspect if the US hadn't grabbed it up, someone else would have. It may have been part of Canada by now.

That was my point -- it would have been a British colony and handed over to Canada just like the Eastern seaboard was.

Well, I think if Alaska wasn’t sold Alaska was part of Russian Empire until the Revolution. Then the Empire fall to pieces – republics. Maybe many white Russians went to Alaska. But what will be after?

Russia wasn't selling to Britian another European power.

UeArtemis, why did Russia sell Alaska in the first place? One year travel time from St Petersburg to Alaska and then another year back. Not the best way to run a country.

Interesting. So the Czar may still be ruling in Alaska? More like Admiral Kulack (or whatever his name was).

The Russians were not that pro Britis so selling to them was a non starter. Selling to the USA was good sense. Of course there is the peoblem of the border on the panhandle that gets settled about 1905 .Could the British taken over Alaska before it was sold ? Maybe but that would/could have led to a European war . So we didn't though given the precedent of the Nootka agreement in the 18th cenmtury maybe something could have been worked out.
