Actually, allowing the USSR to gobble up Moldavia was a smart political move by Hitler: he got a free ally and several badly equipped armies (but troops are troops).

It would also cause the Red Army leadership to indulge in a vigourous improvement campaign of their instrument of war. Forget taking it on the road to Finland or the Baltics. The Soviets might even decide to lightly hold Poland and maintain the Stalin Line forts.
I suspect the Baltics were done for. Finland might be a different matter, depending on just how tough the Russians thought it would be. My understanding is that they thought it would be relatively easy, so they might still chance it.

It wasn't going to reveal anything that the Russians wouldn't have found out in Finland would it?
Aux contraire, in Poland the Red Army was operating in territory where its mechanised doctrine should have excelled at a time of year favourable for mobile operations. If the cost of such an operation was excessive then it should act as a major wake up call. The campaign against Finland revealed weaknesses of a different kind, a rigidity of command and the need for more specialist troops being notable.

        I stand corrected.

Neither do I! But then I never am!

I think you shot from the hip and failed to take account of geography or seasonal factors. Easy to do, not so easy to take back.

After posting it I realized that there was indeed a difference in the type of warfare in both campaigns, and that the campaign in Poland would have been much more illuminating as to the ineffectiveness of the RKKA's armored forces.
