      Annales school

The countless permutations during the Seven Years War and indeed during the whole XVIII century (Age of Cabinet Warfare) are truly mind numbing.
Check for instance what happened before and after the famous 'Renversement des Alliances' and you will see what i mean
No sweat though if you cannot keep track of all battles won or lost, botched campaigns, kings switching alliances etc.etc.etc. and their implications...

To show you really and thoroughly understand the dynamics of this period, do not concentrate trying to identify that single key battle or that ominous event as the death of a ruler or two generals on the field of battle, instead concentrate on just two things:

      Geopolitics and Finance

For background information and in order to show your in good company: there is a famous French school of historical thought that advocates just that. It is called 'the Annales' and I think that while their views are universally applicable they certainly hold true for the Seven Years War.

If the above is too general or God forbid too French for you then concentrate on:
the quality of the rulers like Frederick the Great or Pitt,
the constant quality and expertise the Prussian army and the British navy.

Well Prussia will either be pernanently reduced in power,or divided up between Russia and Austria, which means some of my ancestors would be speaking Russian.
If the art of war were nothing but the art of avoiding risks, glory would become the prey of mediocre minds. Napoleon
