  • What if COVID had genuine Black Death mortality? How would the west cope?

Europe and the US have been turned upside down by a virus that has a c1% mortality rate. Most countries have to a greater or lesser extent had lock downs and the world has been put on pause.
Given the devastation wrought by Covid how would Western Europe and the US deal with a pandemic that had genuine plague (like the c14th century Black Death but a virus rather than bacteria so antibiotics won’t work) like mortality and infection rates? Dependant in type the mortality rate of the Black Death could range from 30% to 98%.

This is the most important question.

It looks like "liberals" would use it as an opportunity to instigate their only slightly disguised "socialists revolution". We already see the "liberal" proclivity for totalitarianism in the draconian response by Democratic Governors and Mayors.

Historically city states did better than large centralized government in dealing with pandemics. We see a bit of that in how much more effective South Korea and Taiwan were in this crisis. We also see how quickly the EU broke down with Germany's initial reluctance to aid Italy. There were even some States in the U.S. that suggested they would block travel from adjacent States. As it turns out the binding forces of central governments are only strong as the perceived benefit to it's subdivision as with the EU or how much totalitarian control can be imposed as in China.

If the next pandemic has a high mortality rate what will happen depends greatly in how far in the future it takes place. If next year the entire economic and political system would melt down. If a hundred years from now it's impossible to predict.

I think that we should embrace the city state as a goal. Not in the literal sense but as a basic unit of organization. With the advent of automation self sufficiency in manufacturing is a real possibility. Even food and raw materials may not be as big a problem as people think. A revolution in energy production would be needed but social forces are pushing hard for it to take place.

The reason I think the city state model is so attractive is that it is becoming clear that a good deal of political affinity is genetic. Voting with your feet seems the only real solution to the political divide.

All of which means that the U.N. needs to be relegated to the dust bin of history. The World Health Organization has proven to not only be incompetent but corrupt. It's unlikely that it is not just a reflection of the organization as a whole. We do not need an international central government. We need an organization focused on protecting sovereignty.

      The return of stern religion?

After an epidemic in 1850, a missionary named Titus Coan reported that “No opportunity was omitted, and no efforts were spared, to impress upon the people the idea that the Lord was holding the rod over them, and to stimulate and encourage them to profit by the chastisement, by humiliation, confession and penitence, by loving, adoring and fearing their heavenly Father, and by saying unto him with Job, ‘Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him’”

We wouldn’t. We’d die like flies and the survivors would starve. Everything would fall apart. With the Black Death most people lived close to the food supply so the survivors could eat, now I doubt 90 percent of people could start a fire without a lighter... and forget about what happens once the power grid falls down.

Continuing on my theme of community vs central authority and since religiosity was mentioned it's a good time to push back against the idea that guns and bibles are associated with a low intelligence population. The following article explores the topic.

"The Myth of the Stupid Believer: The Negative Religiousness–IQ Nexus is Not on General Intelligence (g) and is Likely a Product of the Relations Between IQ and Autism Spectrum Traits"

          https://link.springer.com/article/10...43-019-00926-3

The key to how successful a community with a high level of religiosity is will be tied to how tolerant it is of geniuses with autistic traits.

Well this is bound to ruffle some authoritarian leftard feathers unless they refute it first out of knee jerk reaction.

This is the correct answer. Wolfhound and the others are putting too much thought into it. It has nothing to do with politics.
