  • The Brittany Redoubt

(sorry if this was already covered somehow, if it was. I can't seem to work the Search option anymore)

    France, May 20th, 1940.

The idea of a Redoubt comprising the Brittany peninsula was bandied about in June, when it was too late to put it into effect. What if it had been planned and organized from the above date?
What units would have been available?
Could a sufficient density of troops and the 4th DCR have been moved there in time?

If a part of Metropolitan France had been able to hold out, would France's overseas empire also stay in the Allied camp?

Could Peitan and Comtess Porte' have sabotaged that effort, as they did Union with the UK and Raynaud's will to fight on?

I think it could have worked, if enough material could have been placed there. Manpower would not have been a problem, simply transfer all the men saved at Dunkirk straight to Brest.

It would have been a WW2 Gallipoli. An ulcer to drain British and remaining French resources. Churchill who we'll remembered the first Gallipoli and his effective coalition deputy Atlee who fought there gave the idea shot shrift and rightly so.

Churchill was ready to do anything to keep France in the war. His Generals would have had other ideas, but it wasn't their decision.
      It wasn't Churchill's , either.

IMHO, the only real problem was the fact that the L.W. would have had free runs over the whole place, even with Me109 escort.

        Hi Exorcist

Firstly it would have been politically suicidal for the French Government to make such a plan and militarily it would have been squashed as a waste of resources, unless both parties had a magic ball to see the future.

Any bastion wouldn't have lasted long enough (a year plus) to effect the outcome in the West or NA. The British were dead against the idea as they could see the future, in that they'd just be throwing more men & material into a BH, when they'd just evacuated one at Dunkirk.

If memory serves the bastion was to held by 10 Divisions inc 2 British, with more promised as and when they became available. The Allies would have minimal air cover having to rely on those air units based in the bastion, whose airfield in many cases would be under enemy artillery fire, let alone aerial attack.

        Regards
