  • What if........

I like to think that even if the South would have won their independence, they would have still had ties with the North.
They would have reunited militarily during the Spanish American War, and all others that followed.
Slavery was dead well before Appomatox.
The South just wanted to be left alone.

There would have been no Spanish American War if the South had won because Cuba would have become annexed by the Confederacy.

There was a quote in a recent SOUTHERN PARTISAN that if the South had won, GW Bush would have been the liberal candidate and Algore wouldn't have ever been on the ticket.

Something to be said for that...

i dont think that the south would have had ties with the north after the war. one must remember that the civil war was the most bloody conflict in us history also it was very emotional damaging the north and south seemed to hate each other so if the south had won its indipendance the two countrys would have been very hostile for many many years

I don't agree. The records are full of personal ties that held up through years of war. I think those personal ties and friendships would have overcome the regional animosities. Many of them even survived reconstruction, which was longer and much more personal for many (maybe most) Southerners.

            Luckily, we never found out.

Yeah, slavery would have endured for some time longer, but an independent South would have needed to industrialized, which would have ment change some plantations over to "industrial parks" or something of the sort. The North and South would have established diplomatic relations, probably within a year or two.

Had the south won its independence the NORTH would have needed the ties not the south, because without the southern economy the north would have been devestated and their industrilization would have been useless.
