Lincoln in all probability would have had the same troubles with Post Civil War Reconstruction that President Andrew Johnson did and as a result, probably would not be remembered with the same degree of reverence and high esteem that his martyrdom engendered to later generations. Lincoln was a strong believer in letting the South come back into the Union with few restrictions and that would not have played well throughout the Eastern and Midwestern United States that had suffered so many dead and wounded before finally putting down the late rebellion.

Reconstruction would have been handled more consistantly, that ought to be a given!

I wonder how the election of 68 might have gone... who would Lincoln have wanted for a successor?

What was Lincoln's attitude towards the Indians, what would he have done differntly there?

He would probably gone on a tour of Europe (perhaps to get away from Mary) and he would have been the first acting President to do so. But then... I have to wonder if some anarchist or anti-democracy aristocrat might not have shot him there?
Fate seems to have an odd way of re-asserting itself.

Reconstruction would have been easier on the South after losing the War of Northern Aggression, at least until after the '68 election. I feel that the winner of the '68 election would probably won on a platform of further punishing the South. Lincoln would still be remembered for forcing the Union to stay together, but he might of been thought of better in the South had reconstruction gone easier.

Lincoln's track record(for example, his position which made him the most acceptable Republican candidate for President and his ability to maneuver the war or peace decision on the Southerns at Sumter) shows him to be a shrewd political and military strategist who could self-educate himself during the course of an event and suspend his decisions to the last possible moment for the most information upon which to base his decisions. He was already laying the ground work with his Gettysburg address which had no vilification of the Southerns. Reconstruction would have been more wisely directed under his hand.

Doesn't she remind you of Hillary?

While I am no fan of Hillary, she doesn't--Mrs. Lincoln was off her rockers.

Not at all. Hillary reminds me of an angry, shrill and loud mouthed, socialist, man-hating lesbian. Mary Lincoln was a very high strung woman who came from a genteel, upper class background. When Lincoln was asassinated, it utterly destroyed Mary both emotionally and mentally. If Bill were to ever eat a bullet, the only way that Hillary could ever work up any convincing tears would be for her to pull out some of her own nosehairs beforehand.

So am I to assume that Hillary will not get your vote come next November?
