  • What if Hitler had been accepted to art school?

One of my favorite questions - what if Hitler had been accepted to art school?

I've seen some of his water-colors. They aren't bad (although I can't say I have a trained eye). They are certainly better than I could do and better than what I've seen in some galleries.

So, what would our world be like if he had vented on his canvas?

I've seen this question come up several time on discusiion boards & find it hysterically funny. My vision is of Hitler emerging as a leader of the 'Aryan Movement' in the art world, using his eloquence to sell wealthy ladies and others on the same 'Pure German' art style that was pushed during the 3rd Reich era. A advertising shill named J Gobbbels would enhance Hitlers sales with over the top publicity campaigns, and the sales would be futher enhanced by the colaboration with the architect Albert Speer.

there is a great book on that topic

"la part de l'autre" by belgian writer Eric Emmanuel Schmit

he imagines a story where Hitler gets accepted to the vienna conservatory at his second attempt, gets analysed by Freud, develops a healthy sexuality, becomes an artist in Paris's monmartre after ww1 and frequents Monet, Picasso, etc. and is just an "average" artist not a genius one... marries a jewish heiress from the Rubinstein family... and after ww2 (well, the German-Polish war of 1950) emigrates to live his life in California and ends his life quietly in the USA in the 1970's as Germany leads Europe (and a post-Soviet collapse Russia) as the leading economy in the world, with a german man to the moon in the 60's, etc.

Hitler is a really nice guy in this book.

            scary.

Hitler wasn`t rejected on the basis that he was bad. He was rejected on the basis that he would have better served studying architecture (Hitler`s speciality were buildings). Hitler agreed, but the problem was that he was unable to afford such studies.

To be honest, I don`t think his studies would have affected his future course in any way. Even if he was able to countinue his studies and not try to live off painting postcards, he was still a great German nationalist and would have still joined the German army after the beggining of WWI. Which in turn would have still caused his "revelation" after recovering from the gas attack and would have still had connections to military circles which would eventually lead him to NSDAP which shared his views.

AS a person who is infuriated to a state that really defies description by the education system. I'd have to say that being accepted and treated with respect would have had a massive impact on his personality. Tom Phoenix is probably right though. Perhaps being accepted into the school may have resulted in further irritation to his already strained mind.

I gotta agree also with CARL.....Hysterical. Makes a mockery of the propaganda surrounding this man. Makes you wonder how much of life tragedies have similar roots in the seemingly mundane.

So the movie 'Downfall" becomes about a demented artist whose grants from the National Endowment for the Arts finally stop after he paints a nude of Herman Goering and calls it "Still life of the Luftwaffe". In his dispair he shoots himself....good ending either way.

And he shot himself while Berlin is filled with newly popular artists from the Soviet Socialist realism movement. They completely dominate the 1945 Berlin Art Fair strutting about drunk and trying to molest the girls.

And in humor, there is truth. People, lets go back to Poly Sci. 101. From chaos will come a charismatic leader. Focusing on the man (Hitler) ignores the cauldren from which he emerges. While it might be true that this specific individual would not acheive the acme, who could say that another would not have emerged with the same or (god forbid) another format.

Imagine a Germatic leader that would have followed the basic premise of a Hitler, but had the patience to wait until their scientists had developed their ideas until 1950?

                        Opitions abound.

The dumber ideas I would hope. Technology moves ahead in fits & starts & in many venues. One wonders where the the real advances would have emerged. Several of the French tank projects under development in 1939 looked like something from the 1950s and their hypervelocity gun projects made the German 88 look antiquated. Attempting to predict who would come out ahead would probablly suggest no one.
