  • Japan-German hookup

Germany goes southern route, Japan concentrates on China/Burma instead of island campaign, they both hook up in North Idia. Then what? what are the material implications? Rubber for Germany? Oil for japan?

I realize if Germany did bust through Egypt & into north Iran, their likely tearget would be Baku, not north India, But what the hell, it's in the alternative section.

If Germany hadn't gotten itself into a fight with Britain, and if Japan hadn't gotten itself into a fight with the U.S., AND if they coordinated a little more, then they could have rolled the continent up pretty good.

Personally I think that one of the reasons that France and Britain declared war after the attack on Poland is that they were afraid of a straight German drive towards the East until they meet the Japanese.

Hitler on the other hand seemed not to have understood that. Japan wasn't really in his picture for tight cooperation at the time and he wondered why the Western Allies cared about Poland.

Agree. Japan did preplan landings on Madagascar & east coast of Africa.

perhaps inprobable is the link in Russia, had Japan focused ONLY on russia and not on the USA (that is, if Japan could have enough fuel to go into siberia, and not be defeated in manchuria by hordes of unstoppable T-34s)

but indeed, if Japan had not attacked the US and went only on NEI and britain, if could have landed in India, promised independence - and watch millions of Indians kicking out the british... and then meet somewhere in the Red Sea with Germans and Italians.

Pasta, Sushi, Saurkraut party. Or Vino, Saki, Lowenbrau.

Seriously though, with Italian naval prsence in Somaliland, a Madagascar op seems um, possible? without going into detail about available forces etc. For the Japanese, Midway kinda screwed up their Indian ocean plans, that & Guadalcanal.

Well Hitler tries to Invade Japan this starts a new front and get his a*** kicked by Japan,Russia, America and Britan and Japan and America make a deal and war in Pacific stops but not because of Atomic bomb and territory is devided between Japan and America and a cold war conflict starts in Asia thats what I reckon could happen if Hitler managed to go east.

I dont think a axis hook up would have been possible at all. Too much ground to take too far away from germany or japan. I wonder how japanese and german soldiers would have greeted each other. Anyway too far and not enough men to link up and could have easily been cut in half by the allies.

Lack of men and lack of logistical support. The Japanese build the railroad seen in the Bridge of the River Kwai because they needed a way to supply their forces on the Burma-India border. One of the reasons they lost Guadalcanal was because they had trouble getting enough troops and supplies to the island.

There's no way they could have kept that link up together. Too far and not enough men. I agree the logistics are impossible

Not if Japan had Indian ports & if there were rail connections.

The big question is indeed whether you could make India's population revolt and support the Axis.

I give up, what do we say?

India was very much anti British. Lots of em anyway. Woulda considered Germans liberators.

To me it seems more realistic for Japan to reach the India-Burma border at around the same time they actually did, then say that if the Indians support them against the Allies that India will be independent. A combined Indian revolt and Japanese attack quickly destroys most British forces in the country. Ceylon is then invaded by a Japanese fleet that quickly liberates the popluation from the British opressors. End result is that Japan and Germany link somewhere west of India and the axis now have a massive population in India to draw more troops from.

Indeed. & if Germany got ports in Iran or somewhere on Indian ocean, then shipping goods would be the more viable option.
