  • November 1941

On 2 November 1941 Stalin slips while climbing into a car and suffers a bad fall, including a sharp blow on the head. Annoyed but apparently only bruised, he continues to the planned staff briefing. Some hours later he collapses in a short but savage convulsion, and appears to be suffering from a stroke. Medical treatment establishes he has a cerebral aneurysm, and late that evening he dies while in surgery.

How does this affect the war?

Who will replace him, and can they hold the USSR together?
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

Soviet constitution had a mechanism for replacing the Party Secretary. In any case given the emergency I cant the Pty Sec replacement being a priority task for the government. Probably another political hack

He would be replaced by roughly the same lot that replaced him in 1953.
The Soviet union might be run by the State Defence committee - a subset of the Politburo. I would imagine that Beria, Kruschev, Malenkov Bulganin and Molotov would be central figures with significant parts of the economy being handled by voznesensky, Kalinin and Mikoyan. All of them might have done better than they historically did without the fear of Stalin. Zhadnov, would be cut off in Leningrad and would have more autonomy (which would be a good thing). Voroshilov might be notionally in charge of Stavka, but it would be Zukhov who would get the freedom to do things his way. It might have resulted in a better coordinated Red army offensive from Dec 1941 and a reduction in Red army casualties from the repeated (and senseless) attacks at Stalin's urging, during early 1942, particularly in the Crimea and by Vlasov's Army on the Volkhov front.
