    That indeed was one of the issues leading to rejection. Even at Salerno a large part of the initial air cover had to come from Royal Navy carriers but the extra wear and tear of carrier operation meant that it was a near thing between the establishment of air strips in the landing area and the exhaustion of the carrier aircraft - the majority of which were unservicable afterwards. Part of the terraine issue I mentioned was that there was a lack of suitable sites for establishing airfields in any potential expanded bridgehead.
