  • Hannibal vs. the Mauryan Empire

Let us say there is a Suez Canal that ships can sail through. What happens if Carthage sends Hannibal's army and their navy to India?

The Mauryans had a powerful navy and were used to defend a lot of fortified coastline, and the people has a history of ocean going reaching the Persian Gulf by 6th Century BC. Lot of longbows there also. Not so sure Hannibal could even come ashore.

Artillery is much longer ranged than longbows. We have very very little info for any Mauryan navy. It seems they were mostly land based with not much of a need for anything more than a coastal navy. Now look at the Punic ship design. Qinimerems, triremes, and quadrimerems as warships with round ships as transports and supply ships. No evidence for any Indian ships for the period at all. Definitely not galley warships. So the Carthaginians have a distinct advantage at sea.

There supposedly is a lot of literature, but not much interest in translating it from Sanskrit. One has to really look just to get a tiny mention by Tacitus or Euxodus. I gave up on trying to find more a long time ago.

No info for this eras fleet but based on others in India close they didn't have galleys or shipboard artillery. I'm not thinking fortified cities all over but they could easily be taken. Its actually the lack of written records that hurts in India not translation. So point to Hannibal.

Alexander never fought the Mauryan empire or reached India proper.
