    But while Collier#2 (which Lexington replaced) would have been smaller then Lexington, Ranger would have been at least close to a Lexington sized Carrier which leaves the US only 1.5 steps behind. The Yorktown class was a group, and the US would not have built 3-4 small fleet carriers.

    If anything there would have been a second Ranger type in line with Wasp, then the 3 Yorkies. So Yorktown comes 1-2 years later and are still in action by the time of Pearl Harbor.
    Depends, lacking the Lexington's US thinking may have gone in different directions.
