The last link is one of the better ones, but I think the site is down until May.
Scientists have announced they've discovered a cure for apathy. However no one has shown the slightest bit of interest !!

As far as elite - it all depends on what division one is discussing. Certainly the Das Reich, Wiking, Totenkopf, or Liebstandarte could qualify for that status - but others like the Chalremagne and Maria Theresa do not. Do you have a particular one in mind?

          Waffen SS

I know that one of the units that Rommel requested for the D-day
was the Panzer Lehr. I think it was an SS unit.

I have to say the "leiberstandarte" ss or 1st SS Panzer Division. They had an abundance of leadership with Sepp Dietrich, Kurt Meyer, Michael Wittman, Jochen Peiper, and other commanders.

Some of them were fanatical, but "Leiberstandarte" and "Das Reich are top on the list.

Panzer Lehr was a German Army unit made up of Instructors from the various tank training schools.

                DAS REICH

The Das Reich Division is my favorite SS division. I really don't like the totenkoph (deathshead division).

The SS were always loyal to their fuhuer!!!

Probably should qualify that - the true Volksdeutsche SS were loyal. Many of the Balkan divs had a less than exemplary record for fighting for their leader.

The DR, Lieb, Wiking, HJ, and the units from Northern Europe (with the exception of the Charlemagne) all served well. The Totenkopf gets a bad name because of its foundations - but by 1943 it fought just as well as the other units and was made of about the same type of soldier.

My favorite "German" units would be

WSS - Wiking tied with Leibstandarte
                    Heer - Gross Deutschland
Luft - FallschirmPanzer Div "Hermann Goering" (Paratroops and Tiger Tanks!)

                    Cheers!

Didn't Charlemagne participate in the defense of Berlin?

I don't know about Charlemagne, but Wiking did. Wiking was nearly oblliterated in the defense of Berlin. One of the most famous photos from Berlin shows a burned out SPW-250 belonging to Wiking.

                        It can be seen here.

If I recall, Osprey Books (English) and Ballantine Books (US) both published books on this, including "Waffen SS; The Asphalt Soldiers".

                            Osprey Books

I own the Osprey Waffen SS book. The book is very informative and the pictures are some that have never been seen before. That's where I first learned about that they make the SS uniforms at the concentration camps, made by the inmates!!

They fought there to the last man.

                              They also couldn't go home.
