That was the term then...we also used it for Warsaw Pact forces before they went TU. In the US we use separate, as in "separate brigade".

I have listings of these units but no data on deployment dates or make up.

As in 173 ABN or 197th INF BDE?
                That explains it.

Yep, just like that. We used to talk about Independent Tank Battalions back in Warsaw Pact days. It's just a terminology thing.

...and just a couple days ago, we were remarking about the Fulda Gap. Almost as if we miss having the reds as bad guys.

It was simpler then. We knew where they were and who they were. They were even nice enough to build a fence for us.

I was able to drive through in when I was living in Heidelberg -- took the Autobahn across to Eisenach. It was really weird doing that. That area is still very dark and not very built up, by either East or West German standards.

'Scuse me if I don't reminisce. My battalion was expected to fight for three days as the covering force artillery. After that time, they figured we'd be done, and I don't mean that in a good way.

I agree that having an enemy who was decent enough to appear to fight us in a face-to-face war was nicer than scumsucking terrorists who kill innocents and non-combatants, but we tend to forget we had them then, too -- the Red Army Faction, Viet Cong, etc. -- and the USSR used them to fight a proxy war on many levels against us.

Oh, I know. On the airfield we expected to have a 15 min life expectancy. Most figured we'd be lucky to get off the post to the assembly area.
