  • Allied Hybrid Armor

A while back I started a thread on Panzer Hybrids that was pretty popular. Now that Allied Armor has a home here I figured fair is fair.

I found this photo in one of my older books of the British Centaur Dozer.
These armored dozers were built on the chassis of surplus Centaur tanks whereby the turrets were removed and a winch, installed in the lower hull, was used to raise and lower a blade via a boom. That tank in this photo, and the only one I've yet seen, was employed by the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group in clearing obstacles during and after the D-Day landings

I would be very interested in seeing other examples of Allied Armor hybrids others in the group may know of.

Good thread. I guess the best known 'hybrids' were 'Hobart's Funnies'. My favourite was the ARK or Armoured Ramp Carrier. This was a Churchill tank without a turret that had extendable ramps at each end so other vehicles could drive up the ramps and over the vehicle to scale obstacles. They could also be used in two as the bottom (not very clear) picture shows with one on top of the other.

I think it's a safe bet that amost every type of Allied tank was eventually turned into a bridgelayer or minesweeper. Just like almost every type of German tank was eventually turned into a tank destroyer.

I thought this was pretty cool. The M30 Munitions Carrier, which was fashioned from the chassis of the M3 tank as a tender vehicle for the M12 Motor Carriage. It could haul up to 40 155mm shells.

Speaking of the M12, it too was cobbled from the chassis of the old M3 tanks, with engine relocated center rear of the vehicle.

Is it a jet powered car that was designed for Richard Hammond?

I would guess it is an engine test bed. Just a guess though.

But why mount it on a tank chassis?

Mobility to take it and 'hide' it in some place the Luftwaffe reconnaisance planes would think to look. For example the German jet program was verified by the jets leaving heavy exhaust stains on the runways they used.
