Good catch. They also gained surprise - the Germans were taken aback that the US continued the attack in the Hürtgen.

        • I've come to a startling conclusion after our endless 'best general' threads, which usually ends...

Yanks in the blue corner cheering for Patton and booing Monty

Limeys in the red corner booing everybody except Monty

My startling conclusion is all of them were like top heavyweight boxers, a force to be reckoned with, but always likely to getting sparked with a sucker punch!

The long toll of the brave
          Is not lost in darkness
          Over the fruitful earth
          And athwart the seas
Hath passed the light of noble deeds
          Unquenchable forever.

I was thinking about posting a proposal than any future "best general" discussion disallow Patton, Monty, and Zhukov, but you did it better. Thanks.

            • This thread barely even had any proper Patton-Monty bashing though. Not like in the good old times.

The sucker punch that sparked Monty was thrown by Eisenhower though ...

Rommel certainly has claim to being a great general, more so than, say, Patton. His misfortune was that he came up against a greater one.

                      • I haven't been following this because it isn't really my area, but has anyone thought to mention William Slim?

Good divisional commander. Utter sucker as Field Marshal.

                            • Alam el Halfa, El Alamein, Medinine etc. Let's ask this question in another way. What were any military victories of Rommel after July 1942?

                              • A more correct question would be - what ressources did he had at his disposal ?
