  • D-DAY...

I think a certain Gentleman would think it a tad remiss...
    if none of us, remembered..

    LEST WE FORGET

The long toll of the brave
    Is not lost in darkness
    Over the fruitful earth
    And athwart the seas
Hath passed the light of noble deeds
    Unquenchable forever.

    Agree wholeheartedly.

    Well done.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

My grandfather stormed the beaches of Normandy. Killed 3 Germans and captured 5 more. Sure it was in 1975 and he was drunk, but still...
Jokes aside well done to all. Young boys given men’s jobs, and did it and then some

          Long Live the allies

One of the most dangerous jobs was to be in a tank crew on that day...unloading into Normandy beach.

I have known many of these men over the years. I did one of the Normandy Anniversaries with a large group of them years ago.
            My worst jump story:
My 13th jump was on the 13th day of the month, aircraft number 013.
As recorded on my DA Form 1307 Individual Jump Log.
            No lie.

My father and I went to Normandy to visit the Canadian historical sites last year. The trip was amazing and the people of the area were incredibly hospitable.

We can never forget the sacrifice of so many on D-Day.
Here is a story about one such group of men, it is one that deserves to be remembered

                          Moxie defined:

After landing on the wrong beach, BG Theodore Roosevelt Jr said, "We'll start the war from right here!"

Also, when Piper Bill Millen mentioned that piping in action was against regulations, Lord Lovat said, "Those are English regulations. You and I are Scottish."

A role often overlooked on D Day is that of the minesweepers who had to go in ahead of the allied armada.

My father and uncle both served on HMS Fraserburgh on D Day. She was the first minesweeper on the outermost left hand line of the allied shipping headed for Sword beach. Flotilla Commanders were told to expect 80% casualties. Fortunately the Germans didn’t open up and I’m here today!

The crews worked in watches, 4 hours on and 4 hours off. After spending the day sweeping they would then form part of the “Trout Line” protecting larger ships in the bombardment line from German air, u-boart and e-boat attacks.

Dad and my uncle didn’t talk about it much and I didn’t ask........
