  • US Air Force use of Soviet Airfields allows allies to Crush German targets

Stalin, Churchill and FDR had meant in Tehran in late Nov 1943 and outlined a plan where upon the allied leaders declared there complete agreement as the scope and timing of operations from the east west and south. 6 months later There was to be joint sea and air operations between the Soviets and Americans. This USSR agreed to provide its airbases in Russia to be allowed for use of US air forces for the strategical use in Europe. This allowed objectives in central Europe to be attacked from numerous directions, from Allied control Italy and from friendly England. This co operation would reduce flying times. This idea of shuttle bombing would confuse the Third Reich, allies were attacking from all sides.

In order to ensure this operation supplies had to be transferred thousands of miles via air, rail and more. It was a massive operation. Steel and Auto from the USA was shipped across the world having to pass by Egypt and Palestine eventually making its way into allied hands to fight the Reich.

US Troops were welcomed by Soviet men and women. Soviet women showered the Americans with flowers. There was dancing between Soviets and Americans. The Russian was described as a fine solider by a US Major General. Upon US soldiers realizing they were in Russian territory a huge sense of relief was felt, see the 14:25 mark of the above video.

This operation smashed Germanys last hope of victory which Germany was hinging upon a victory by dividing the allies and trying to pit the Soviets and Americans agaisnt each other. A massive lesson to learn from today and for all time.

The man himself commented on the actions, FDR said to congress on March 1 1945

Never before have the major allies been more closely united-and they are determined to continue to be united-so that the ideal of lasting peace will become a reality

Operation Frantic was not a huge success and far from strengthening the Soviet-American alliance,it increased suspicion and hostility between the two sides. It was more a propaganda tool than a practical operation. Initial good relations between lower level participants eventually deteriorated due to errors, misunderstandings and higher level political maneuvering.

      From the above article:
Operation Frantic demonstrated the flexibility and reach of American logistics operating under trying conditions. It also demonstrated the political role of airlift logistics in terms of operational support that would have been impossible by conventional ground-based means. However, Frantic had not been a good use of Allied resources. The Germans judged it to be a propaganda exercise to impress the Soviets, but all it really accomplished was to make the strains in the Allied alliance more obvious

I read the same allegations on Wikipedia that were nowhere to be found in the video I posted. I donít believe at all what Wikipedia said but that being said I would be interested in what other sources have to say.

I loved the video in the op I thought it was so inspiring and it made me feel really good to watch it

There is also a discrepancy in Numbers between the American video I posted in comparison to the modern day Russian source that the last poster provided

I could see that in the modern times political operatives are trying to destroy that beautiful bond between Soviets, Americans and British and the allies in general of World War II. I severely distrust Wikipedia on a number of there articles.

The Luftwaffe followed one bombing group back to the fields they were using and bombed them badly. The Red Air Force did not think losing air bases was a good trade off. By the USAF crews tried to help battle the fires but were politely told by the Soviets to back off, they would handle this.

The shuttle mission strategy using Soviet airfields lasted only a short time. The reasons for the failure were variously:

Soviet paranoia about having Western airmen and units in the Soviet Union
Inability of the Soviet air force and antiaircraft service to provide adequate protection of the airfields
Poor logistics on the part of the Soviets.

These problems manifested themselves at the higher levels of command, not among the lower levels. At lower levels things would and could have worked well. It was when you got higher up things fell apart. Without support from Stalin and his generals (who were clearly afraid of Stalin) the shuttle mission system was going to fail.

22:34 mark of the video we see Soviet and US soldiers working on a US warplane. Thats what allies do. Btw those US warplanes were made of American Auto and Steel. The video in the OP not only showcases the contributions of American and Soviet military, but also that of the American and Soviet Auto and Steel worker. 500 tons of bombs and so much great work were produced by 50,000 American and Soviet work hours in preparation of the grand operation to strike the Reich from all sides.

World War II magazine had an article on this a while ago.

German air force units attacked the air fields. My impression from the article was the Soviets did a poor job of defending the USAAF aircraft on the ground.
