P-51 Was the OVERALL best fighter aircraft of WW2, I like Me-262 it was the fastest but it had lots of tehnical problems and came late in the war.

That's wot the Jerries said at both Monte Cassino and the Faliase pocket!
The long toll of the brave
        Is not lost in darkness
        Over the fruitful earth
        And athwart the seas
Hath passed the light of noble deeds
        Unquenchable forever.

Well, every plane had something that made it a little more special for the pilots that flew them. Are we talking about diving, speed, cornering, range, speed? Escort, attack, recce?

Of listed, my first vote would go to the Spitfire. It had its issues, but it kicked ass when the chips were down.

As I've said before, it isn't the aircraft as much as the pilots training, spirit and willingness to close with the enemy.

Well, to be honest, this poll was meant to happen since it is a continuation of another thread that you can find on page 2 of this section that I started some months back before I got bannished the last time, that lasted for approximately 39 pages & like 540 Threads posted.

I think the topic talked itself into oblivion.

The only thing left to do was tally up the votes for each plane & post a poll to see what everybody thought.

In truth, and boy do I hate to admit this, but Johnnie Johnson's Plane came out on Top, but only after you added in all the different marks that were voted on for The Supermarine Spitfire.

The Initial Spitfire itself only got about 15 Votes, but The MK XIV, The MK IX & The MK VIII, made up for the other 30 Votes.

BUT.....When you compare it to the almost 35 Votes for the Fw-190D-9 "Dora", you begin to get the idea that just maybe the Spitfire wasn't really the King of The Hill.

Oh Yeah.....And The Japanese Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate 'Frank', despite not actually making the poll list itself, and only getting a couple of votes here & there, (Holy Crap.....I Just Realised That The Ki-84 & The Frank are The Same Plane) was HIGHLY RECOMMENDED & GOT GOOD REFERRALS.

this is probably the best way to wrap up your thread, Dook, so kudos there...Wish i could pick from a combination of the Spit and the 109, but...i guess ill pick the german plane, just to even it up a bit.

I was thinking Corsair or Mustang, and went Mustang.

Well the Hellcat was very successful in the Pacific theatre, the Corsair was a very close second.

The Spitfire was an outstanding plane and was able to be upgraded throughout the duration of the war.

I chose the Hellcat in the end... very strong plane in design.

Ahh...the Commonwealth CA-12 Boomerang. The only aircraft in the history of aviation to be designed as a fighter, built as a fighter and flown as a fighter to never shoot down a single enemy aircraft. GREAT work guys.
                          The P-39 got votes?

Went the 'Stang as usual. Always the P51, for no reason other than it has always been the best looking.

                            Yes yes, I am shallow.

Bruce (my Dad) built Boomerangs at the Commonwealth Aircraft Factory during the war. They only stopped when the Beaufighters and P38's started getting assembled there.
