  • The clock ticks down to D-Day

For thousands of soldiers and sailors, waiting for the D-Day invasion was a test of nerves.

For my part, working on L/Craft for months, endless training at Hayling Island with one eventual target, it was almost a relief when the moment arrived. No leave No outgoing mail No phone calls, and when we were finally briefed on the actual Area, it left us with a vague idea of where Normandy was and that's about all. Apart of course from the system of the actual landings. All we had to do now is wait for the Off, and that for us was early on the Sunday morning 4th of June Southampton docks to the carrier ships. lcm1
