    Japan's notorious POW camp in Manila couldn't hold James Carrington, who not only escaped, but returned to war against the enemy.

    One of the big disincentives towards escaping was that the Japanese would frequently kill a number of the remaining POWs in reprisal. I've spoken to a couple of men who were POWs on the Death Railway (one was my Politics Prof at university) and they said that getting away from the camp wasn't a problem but the fact that it meant certain death for at least ten of their mates disuaded most escape attempts.
