  • The long march from Stalag Luft IV

I have to admit I was totally unaware of this until I sat down with two survivors of this march in 2005. How they kept their sanity I'll never know.

Will no one tell me what she sings?--
    Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
    For old, unhappy, far-off things,
    And battles long ago:
    -William Wordsworth, "The Solitary Reaper"

Well their was a number of other camps where they where "evacuated" to keep them out of the Russians. I heard of this from the book Kriegie by Kenneth W Simmons

He was not at Stalag Luft IV, but at Stalag Luft III, the same place where the Great escape took place (he arrived after that IIRC, and was in the American section), the book dose mention the winter match to Stalag VII A. Where he talks a bit about the hardships they had to endure on that march.
