  • Chinese forces in war.

    Hi all,

Since some time I was looking for a good description of Chinese forces between 1937-1945, especially TOE, training, evolution of tactics. However there is really little information I was able to find.

Do someone has sources which could be helpful ?

It is hard to find accurate information in English especially from a single source
The following book is due from Helion in February 2016 and is long over due in my opinion

Kangzan A guide to Chinese ground forces 1937 to 1945

    http://www.helion.co.uk/new-and-fort...s-1937-45.html

It may be worth waiting for it.

Hopefully some others may have material to share that is currently available

Well, that's going to be a fairly tall order. Chinese forces were anything but consistent. There were Communist Chinese forces, Nationalist Chines forces, the Nationalist divisions trained by the Germans (usually called German-Chinese Divisions), and US equipped and led Chinese units (X and Y Force as they were sometimes called)

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...lutionary_Army

Then there's the Japanese trained and equipped Manchukuo Army.

Don't forget the Wang Jingwei puppet regime troops. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reorga...ublic_of_China

There were almost as many collaborationist troops as Japanese in China.

Stilwell was heavily biased against Chiang though and was prone to make negative reports on his army in order to make him look bad in Washington.

            Some books I can recommend:

I would add the Romanus and Sunderland Green Books/Jackets; "Stillwell's Mission to China", "Stilwell's Command Problems" and, "Time Runs Out in CBI". Find'em at OP's http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/

Also, several of Freda Utley's works i.e. "Japan's Feet of Clay", 1937, "China at War", 1938; and "Japan's Gamble in China", 1938.

are available for free download at:

              http://fredautley.com/

Utley was highly thought of, her books were big in their day, but they're more socio-political than military history.

              Enjoy!

Stillwell had reason not to like the Peanut. It took 17 tons of supplies sent down the Burma Road to get five tons to the troops. And even then the officers skimmed the lion's share.

The wargame "War of the Suns" has an extensive bibliography listed in its playbook. Keep scrolling for English sources. It's all inclusive including histories and the like but there should be good info on TO&E's.

For a link to the pdf playbook, go here: http://www.multimanpublishing.com/Li...Yo%3D&tabid=65
