Yes those people were a rarity in Nazi Germany,I don't give much for his chances but I hope he had a long, happy life eventually. lcm1

A brave man - and an even more remarkable story than just an isolated act of resistance. Apparently he had joined the Nazi Party for work reasons and then got engaged to a Jewish woman and left or was expelled from the Party. They had two kids, tried to flee Germany and he was arrested and sent to prison. She was later arrested by the Gestapo and he went to into a penal unit. Neither August Landmesser or Irma Eckler survived the war. Their children somehow did.

Their daughter wrote a book on the family in 1996.

"In 1996, one of the daughters, Irene Eckler, published the book "Die Vormundschaftsakte 19351958 : Verfolgung einer Familie wegen 'Rassenschande'" ("The tutelage file 19351958: Persecution of a family for 'dishonoring the race'"). This book about the story of her family includes a large amount of original documents from the time in question including letters from her mother and documents from state institutions."

Thanks for posting that Pierre. It is a story that I did not know about until now.

We all would like to think that we would have the courage to make a stand like that, but in all honesty would we? He was a brave man who deserved a better fate.

Sometimes it's really hard to stay oneself. Not just courage, but neglect of self-preservation of a non-zombified person is necessary.
But friction is a cause (not an obstacle) of a movement, isn't it, anyway?

And, thank you, tigersqn, for info! (a rep is pending)

Also wonderful there exists a photograph of what should have in all likelyhood remained an unnoticed act of silent defiance -

What could have been an image of mass hysteria suddenly becomes an icon of individuality - great find

Chapter 18 in Christopher Browning's book Ordinary Men gives many reasons why so many did not resist Nazi's. A good book to read to try to understand why.

I just watched a wonderful movie about some university students who also had the courage to stand against the Nazi party.

That must be the White Rose. They were all captured and executed if I recall correctly.

Even in the midst of the worst evil, a shining light of courage usually shines through.

did anybody ever think he might just have been to lazy to salute?

General Von Senger did not give a nazi salute (which was required after the July '44 plot) when surrendering at the end in Italy in 1945. He gave the standard military salute as he disagreed with Nazi principals.

Not taking anything away for Mr. Landmesser, but it appears that there is one other guy not doing the sieg heil. Over to the left, picture is too small for me to see clearly. Can someone with a big screen verify?
